Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) has launched a comprehensive Academic Outreach Programme (‘Connecting Our Future’) as one of the ways to implement our new strategy ‘The Erasmian Way, Creating Positive Societal Impact’. The goal of this programme is to increase the proportion of young people from underrepresented groups attending university, and to improve and support their wellbeing and success at university. First-generation students, students with a migration background, and students from families with a low household income, experience (systematic) barriers on their way to, and in, higher education. The Academic Outreach Programme aims to reduce these barriers and contribute to equal opportunities in primary, secondary, and higher education.

The programme consists of three Action Lines. We aim to 1) Elaborate and strengthen our connection with underrepresented primary and secondary school pupils and students in the greater Rotterdam area through several outreach activities, 2) Expand and improve student-centered support at university for these groups and 3) Build new blocks by enabling EUR scientists, teachers, and students to develop, implement and research equity-based opportunity programmes and activities that contribute to the first and second Action Lines. Your work will be focused on the first Action Line (Early Outreach).

The Academic Outreach Programme is part of the D&I Office, and is therefore easily able to  strengthen other relevant projects that are also running  at EUR such as adding more diversity and inclusion aspects among the employees, in the curriculum, teachers’ professional development, and student activation on campus. The Outreach Programme works in close cooperation with the Erasmus Science Hub that introduces school children to science and research, the Erasmus Ambassadors Office, the Pre Academic Programme, the Student Wellbeing Programme, and EUR advice and counseling services.

Main tasks

In close collaboration with the programme manager of the Outreach Academic Programme and project lead of the Early Outreach Action Line, your main tasks as a postdoctoral researcher will be:

  • Performing a process evaluation of the Early Outreach Programme;
  • Performing an effect evaluation of the Early Outreach Programme (comparative analysis);
  • Performing an effect evaluation of two new large Early Outreach educational programmes, targeting primary and secondary school children (randomized controlled trials);
  • Supervising student-assistants.
