The Department of History of the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is looking for two new colleagues:
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN POPULAR CULTURE IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE (0,8 – 1,0 fte)
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN TRANSFORMING SOCIETIES (0,8 – 1,0 fte)
The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is increasing its research and education in the area of History, Applied History and Digital Humanities. Do you have a PhD degree in the field of History or a related field and some years of experience? Come join our school as an assistant professor.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • perform teaching in one or more of our programmes at Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Teaching involves individual supervision of research internships and theses; lectures and workgroups;
  • participating in the research programmes of the department and school;
  • publishing research findings in (high impact) international scientific journals;
  • contributing to the acquisition of external research funding for the benefit of the research programmes;
  • contribute to the management tasks of the department;
  • take an active part in relevant national and international academic networks and organizations.

Requirements

To be eligible, a candidate must have:

  • A PhD degree in History or a related discipline.
  • Extensive research experience, evidenced by ample publications in ranked international journals and grants acquisition efforts.
  • Prior teaching experience, preferably in an international environment, with the well-documented ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
    Candidates who don’t possess a formal teaching qualification, are expected to acquire it within two years (according to the standards of the so-called BKO-University Teaching Qualification).
  • A track record in making societal impact, for example having worked with societal partners, presented research to a non-academic audience.
  • Excellent proficiency in Dutch and English (both at least at level C1 of the Common European Framework; teaching will be in English and Dutch).

Furthermore, we are looking for:

  • Extensive knowledge of - and ample experience with - a wide range of social science research methods.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to co-operate with others and perform well within an international and diverse team.

Conditions of employment

Employment starts preferably on 1 November 2022 and will run for a fixed term of 1.5 years initially, to be converted into a permanent contract contingent upon an excellent performance.

The conditions of employment correspond with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is dependent on your training, experience, knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 3.974,- to a maximum of € 6.181,- gross per month on a fulltime basis, in accordance with Scale 11 or 12 of the CAO-NU. In accordance with the CAO NU a placement in a starting grade is possible for the maximum duration of two years.

In addition, we offer an 8% holiday allowance, an end-of-year payment of 8.3%, and a very generous paid leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision, and we offer partially paid parental leave, fully paid extended birth leave for partners, a personal career budget, work-life balance coaches, discounted collective health insurance, and more. As an employee, you can also use EUR facilities such as the University library and receive a discount on subscriptions for the Erasmus sports center.

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC)

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: History,  Arts and Culture and Media & Communication. There are approximately 2500 students and over 220 employees.

ESHCC offers high quality education, based on scientific research, at the intersection of the Humanities and Social Sciences. We teach our ambitious, Dutch and international students in a stimulating learning environment. After graduation, they will have acquired the knowledge, insight and skills to make an important and inspiring contribution to an increasingly international society in which diversity plays a major role.

The ESHCC also has an ambitious research agenda. We want to strengthen our involvement in multidisciplinary research, expand the share of external funding in our total research funding and increase our social impact. Research takes place within the framework of two research centres:  ERMeCC and History@Erasmus.
