We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer that will conduct research in the context of a Horizon research project on ensuring trust and transparency within explainable AI contexts funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate programmes in Media & Communication. You will join our team working on the research project called SPATIAL led by TU Delft and contribute to our Masters in Media Studies specialisation in Digitalisation, Surveillance and Societies. Candidates with a focus on privacy, ethics and social impacts are preferred. Additional lecture duties will be focused on contributing to both our bachelor and master level courses in communication including the supervision of student theses in this area.
A PhD in Communication, Media Studies, Sociology, or within the domain of other Social Sciences is required, with demonstrated interest in these topics is required. The candidate is expected to possess didactic skills and an affinity for working with students.
Research duties (80%)
• Conducting research within the framework of the Horizon research project;
• Contributing to the data collection and data analysis of the projects;
• Developing, in conjunction with project partners, deliverables for the project;
• Publishing and presenting research results in the form of articles in international peer reviewed journals and papers;
• Participating in and contributing to project meetings and workshops;
• Contributing to project management and engaging with diverse stakeholder groups;
• Taking part in seminars, workshops, etc. that are organised by the Erasmus Research Institute for Media, Culture, History & Society.
Teaching duties (20%)
• Preparing and giving courses within the context of the various degree programmes in the field of Media and Communication;
• Monitoring the literature and integrating new insight into the lessons;
• Supervising and coaching students;
• Contributing to the evaluation of the lessons, both in terms of structure and execution.
• A PhD in Communication, Media Studies, Sociology, or within the domain of other Social Sciences is required);
• Research and analysis skills, particularly with regards to digitalisation, privacy, ethics, AI, and openness to interdisciplinary perspectives;
• Proven affinity for empirical research, as evidenced by your research work, publications, research plans and other projects;
• Didactic potential. Teaching experience is desired;
• Organisational experience and skills;
• Proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Employment is intended to start 1 October 2023, for one year. The contract can be extended based on continued project financing and education opportunities.
You will be based at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC), located at Erasmus University Rotterdam, campus Woudestein. The position is for 0,8 fte - 1 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and in accordance with Scale 10 or 11 of the CAO-NU.
