The Department of Media and Communication has a vacancy for an Assistant Professor in Human Centric Digitalisation (1.0 fte)

Job description

The Department of Media and Communication in the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication is looking for a highly motivated new colleague who is expected to lead contribute and lead research in key projects focused on digitalisation and perform teaching and supervising tasks for the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM) and/or the Master in Media Studies programme.

This position will entail 50% research time focused on the SEISMEC project with additional research connected to other projects. The remaining time will be focused on contributing to edcuation within the department.

Job description
We are looking for a candidate that will work primarily on the SEISMEC project, with contributions to several other continuing research projects in related fieds. Support for the supervision of PhD candidates, the project manager, and consortium partners including internal collaboration within the university will be key. We are particularly looking for a person with knowledge and expertise in organising EU based research with a focus on the field of organizational communication, social science analysis, privacy and data protection, and/or critical understandings of ICTs.

Requirements

  • A PhD in one of the social sciences, preferably in the field of media and communication, and ranks among the 10-20% of his or her peer group;
  • A strong research track record, including publications in international refereed journals;
  • Expert knowledge in the field of social sciences approaches to technology, digitalisation, AI, and/or organizational Communication and the ability to make a contribution to a focus on human centric digtalisation;
  • A broad knowledge and mastery of common research methods in media and communication and/or social sciences;
  • The potential to contribute directly to defined research in the project, supervise PhD candidates, and develop novel approaches to ethical technology development;
  • Prior teaching experience and the proven ability to inspire students from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, apparent from positive assessments by students and peers;
  • The ability and willingness to teach a wide range of topics in the field of media and communication and to develop new courses;
  • Excellent proficiency in spoken and written English. Non-English speakers have to meet the C1-standards of the Common European Framework (CEF). International applicants are expected to acquire a passive understanding of the Dutch language within two years;
  • Strong team-playing, organizational and communication skills;
  • Experience in international academic settings;
  • A willingness to develop knowledge and skills in various disciplines.

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

The starting date of this position is 1 May 2024 but an earlier starting date is preferred if possible. You will be based at the Woudestein Campus in the Department of Media and Communication in the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC). This position is 1 FTE. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of €5247 (Salary scale 12) to a maximum of € 6.737 gross per month (Salary scale 12) on a full time basis, in accordance with the CAO-NU. The duration of the contract is 36 months.

The Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The school has three departments: History, Arts and Culture and Media & Communication. There are approximately 2500 students and 220 employees.

Researchers at the Centre are dedicated to carrying out interdisciplinary research on media, communication, culture, history, and society.

This position will contribute and participate in the newly formed ERMeCHS cluster REACT (Responsible Engagement with AI, Culture and Technology).

Department
The Media and Communication Department is a dynamic, internationally oriented department within the ESHCC. The department offers five international degree programmes: the International Bachelor’s programme in Communication and Media (IBCoM), four international Master’s programmes in Media Studies (Media & Business, Media & Creative Industries, Media, Culture & Society, Digitalisation, Surveillance & Society) and the Research master in the Sociology of Culture, Media and the Arts. The department has close ties with ERMeCHS.
