Applicants must hold a graduate law degree (LL.M) as well as a PhD in constitutional law (or defend their PhD in the very near future). Applicants must be well versed in the field of constitutional law and have an interest in both research and teaching. The position involves teaching and research in (comparative) constitutional law, including fundamental rights. The scope of the teaching and research activities of the constitutional law section within the Department of Public Law encompass Dutch national constitutional law, comparative constitutional law, multi-level constitutional law including the relation between the EU and its member states, as well as multi-level fundamental rights protection. Our research takes place within the setting of the national Montesquieu Institute and in collaboration with the UM institute CERIM.

A substantial part of our teaching and research activities are conducted in English, while the teaching of Dutch law and research into Dutch national constitutional law may take place in Dutch. Accordingly, the successful applicant must have an excellent command of the English language; where a candidate possesses the ability to teach and conduct research in Dutch, this will be taken into account and may be considered an advantage.

Fixed-term contract: 5 years.

Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.

The salary depends on academic qualifications and experience. The salary will be set in salary scale 11 (minimum gross month salary € 3.475,00 and maximum € 4.757,00) and after being promoted to assistant professor level 1 the salary will be set in salary scale 12 (minimum gross month salary € 4.210,00 and maximum € 5.405,00) of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. For people recruited from abroad a reduced income tax rate may apply.
