The statistics group at the University of Twente (UT, in the Netherlands) has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student to work on statistical theory for deep neural networks. These networks are now state of the art for many complex tasks such as object detection on images, speech recognition and game playing. Despite these successes, deep networks are poorly understood. A statistical theory that explains the successes and points to possible limitations is highly needed. You will work on theoretical questions related to statistical risk bounds for deep neural networks.

In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes: Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centra and Digital Society Institute.
Join the university of technology that puts people first. Create new possibilities for yourself, your colleagues and society as a whole. Using modern technology and science to drive innovation, change and progress. That’s what it means to work at the University of Twente.
