Under the auspices of the Chair of History of Architecture and Urban Planning in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of Delft University of Technology, the Leiden Delft Erasmus (LDE) Research Program PortCityFutures, offers a PhD position focused on developing a socio-spatial and GIS-based methodology to assess and compare the quality of spatial, social and cultural relationships (maritime mindsets) in port city regions around the North Sea.

The PhD candidate will focus on the spatial component of the port city region analysis and use deep mapping as an approach to connect the expertise of scholars in the LDE consortium (anthropology, geography, history, business). He/she will collaborate with a postdoc in Leiden and a PhD student at Erasmus University as well as with the faculty members involved in the PortCityFutures research program. Socio-spatial mapping will serve both as an analytical tool and a foundation for design and policy making. Our project uses the Rotterdam The Hague area as point of departure for a thorough comparative investigation of port city regions around the North Sea. In the longer term, we wish to then expand our methodology to the Mediterranean and other areas.

The candidate will have a degree (MSc or equivalent) in a spatial science (urbanism, planning, architecture, geography, historical geography, urban history, planning history, architectural history) with advanced knowledge of GIS. The candidate will ideally have a good grasp on languages spoken around the North Sea or a demonstrated capacity to quickly lean languages (notably: English, French, Dutch, German).

Fixed-term contract: Temporary, 4 years.
