Are you up for an ERC funded project which addresses the role of membrane organisation and dynamics in the equilibrium between complement attack and defence?

Job description

The Gros lab at the Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research, Utrecht University is currently seeking two Postdoctoral Researchers for an ERC funded project on biophysical and structural aspects of the human complement system. The Gros lab studies biomolecular recognition and regulation processes in the area of infection and immunity. The lab has an internationally strong reputation in uncovering the molecular mechanisms that underpin the complement system. We combine protein crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, light microscopy, biochemical and biophysical assays to get a detailed picture of the molecular interactions that enable the complement system to discriminate between pathogens or dying/malignant cells and healthy self-cells. The goal of the current projects is to understand how the molecular mechanisms of complement attack and defence on cell membranes, which determines whether a cell is destined for clearance or not. In particular we will address the role of membrane organisation and dynamics in the equilibrium between complement attack and defence.

Key research questions are:
  • How are membrane proteins organised?
  • How does signalling depend on membrane-protein organization?
  • How does complement respond to membrane organization?

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates that enjoy working in a highly collaborative environment. Candidates must hold a PhD in Membrane Biology/Biophysics/Structural Biology or a related discipline.
For position 1 we are seeking a Postdoc in Structural Biology with a proven interest in membrane biology. Preferably with experience in reconstituted protein/membrane systems.

For position 2 we are seeking a Postdoc in Membrane Biology with an interest in biophysical and structural studies. Preferred candidates have experience with fluorescent scanning-disc confocal microscopy (or related methods) using cell-plasma membranes and reconstituted protein/membrane systems.

Conditions of employment

We offer two temporary positions (2x 1.0 FTE) for the duration of two-and-a-half years. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,709 and €4,274 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment.
