Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics is offering a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor for the research group Optimization and Discrete Mathematics. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in research and preferably have some experience in teaching. We welcome applicants from all subfields of discrete mathematics and optimization. Next to contributing with his or her own research programme, the candidate will also be responsible for teaching and supervising students at various levels (Bachelor, Master, and PhD). The teaching load is about 50% of the working time, including supervision of MSc and BSc graduation projects. The Assistant Professor will make direct links between research and education and will also be responsible for management tasks, acquisition of research projects, and academic valorisation.

The successful candidate should show promise and the potential to be a leading researcher and an inspired and dedicated teacher. The candidate should have a PhD degree in Mathematics or a related discipline, and preferably post-doctoral experience. He/she has a proven track record in his or her research field, visible from refereed publications in high-quality journals. He/she is also interested in collaborating with researchers in application areas, e.g. related to the engineering disciplines of the TU Delft. The university sets specific requirements for the English competence of the faculty, and offers training to improve the level if that should be necessary. Many courses are taught in English, but it is expected that the candidate is willing to learn Dutch.
Fixed-term contract: tenure track (6 years with the prospect of a permanent contract).
For candidates at the Assistant Professor level we offer an initial temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract. The duration of the temporary position is depending on (academic) experience. At the start of your employment, section leader, department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills as part of a development plan. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and during a formal evaluation after a maximum of 2.5 years. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively during this formal evaluation, you will be employed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
The salary range for an Assistant Professor position is 3.637 – 5.656 euro gross per month. Starting salary is based on level of knowledge and (postdoctoral) experience.

Research at Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM) is conducted in six research groups: Analysis, Applied Probability, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Analysis, Optimization and Discrete Mathematics, and Statistics. Our research on the construction and analysis of mathematical models related to science and engineering is both fundamental and applied in nature and is often inspired by technical and societal challenges. We have, for instance, tackled complex mathematical problems to develop a model for predicting the flow of ash pollution after a volcano eruption. To come up with innovative solutions we maintain intensive contact with other TU Delft departments, technological institutes and research departments.
Besides research, education is an important cornerstone of our department. We teach the Applied Mathematics BSc and MSc programmes, as well as mathematics courses within other programmes at TU Delft, and national programmes such as “MasterMath”. Together with KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and the Technical University of Berlin (Germany) we have also initiated the international joint Master’s programme COSSE (Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering).
