From mid-August we are looking for multiple enthusiastic Public Administration and Sociology graduates with strong communication skills and a demonstratable interest in providing education in the bachelor and masters programmes of Sociology and Public Administration.

As a tutor you will guide first, second, third and/or (Sociology) Masters tutorial groups. You will observe and analyse the group process and lead where necessary through the use of questions and examples, but not through the direct provision of answers. You see getting students to a deeper understanding of literature and stimulating the advancement of their academic skills as a challenge you want to undertake. You can find enjoyment in guiding groups of students. The success of the educational programmes are dependent on your contribution so doing so with enthusiasm, motivation, and inspiration are important aspects of this function.

Note: due to measures implemented as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic some education will continue to take place digitally in the 2020-2021 academic year.

• A before September 2020 completed academic Masters degree in Public Administration or Sociology.
• Demonstratable fluency in spoken and written English. Where the applicant does not currently have proficiency in Dutch only candidates with a willingness to learn will be considered.
• Experience with leading a group is a plus.
• An affinity with statistics and academic research methods is a plus (please explicitly state your experience in your cover letter).
• Full availability during the academic year (starting 31st August).

In preparation for the coming academic year you will be required to following an introduction day and several days of tutor training (24th-28th August 2020).

We offer a varied job in a young, diverse, and enthusiastic team with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). The employment contract is initially for a period of 1 year. After this period, there is an option to extend for another year, and then another two years. The probation period is two months.

The appointment is 0.7 fte. You will usually lead two tutorial groups a day, who meet twice a week at fixed times. After each block of five weeks, other courses start and the composition of the groups will change. You will also act as an academic skills trainer during practicals.

The work of a tutor/trainer follows the same schedule as the students, so personal leave/holiday is only possible during the education-free periods. This means that you are required to be flexible. During educational weeks you must be present for three to four working days to provide education and attend meetings such as professional consultations, peer reviews, and trainings. Additional activities such as the preparation of tutorials, grading assignments and exams, and associated administrative tasks (e.g. attendance and grade registration) are not location-specific, but often require a time investment, you will (during educational weeks) therefore work 4 days a week in almost every block.

The starting salary is € 2.790 gross per month (on a full-time basis) in accordance with scale 10 step 0 of the CAO-NU. It concerns UFO-profile Teacher 4/Docent 4 (VSNU). This is an educational function with fixed working and holiday days. Conducting research is not part of the contracted tasks.

The Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) is home to a vast diversity of scientific disciplines: public administration, pedagogical sciences, psychology and sociology. Department of Public Administration and Sociology (DPAS)

DPAS covers the disciplines of Public Administration and Sociology. Two related scientific fields with different profiles. Public Administration studies governance capacity and policy interventions. It focuses on the institutional power to organize and intervene in the relations between different social, political and economic actors. Public Administration in Rotterdam goes well beyond the public realm itself and pays attention to public-private cooperation and networks of organizations. Sociology investigates the social structure of societies and the way it evolves. Sociologists in Rotterdam focus among other things on processes of globalization and individualization and on the effects of these processes on international social relations, the labor market or family relations. Related social problems that are studied are migration, flexibilization and solidarity. The perspectives of Public Administration and Sociology complement each other. Together they guarantee a highly relevant and scientific approach to topical administrative and social issues. The bachelor- and masterprogrammes of DPAS are build on this profile and educate students to become scientifically schooled professionals.
