What you are going to do
Why do many people develop chronic lung diseases? Would it be possible to predict who are at high risk? To find answers to these questions, the PhD candidates of this project will first perform epidemiological research in large existing cohort studies. They will then invite 5.000 people at medium to high risk for developing lung disease to perform a large questionnaire study. After selection, they will include 350 of these participants in a clinical study. When data collection is finished, the candidates will perform (statistical and bioinformatical) analyses in clinical, -omics and exposome data. The PhD candidates will have the opportunity to write publications and to present their work on (inter)national conferences.
What we expect from you
Candidates should hold a Master of Science (MSc.) degree in epidemiology/medicine/pharmacy/ other (para)medical or comparable background and should be fluent in Dutch and English. Ideal candidates have strong organizational skills, experience and skills in epidemiology and are good project coordinators. Furthermore, candidates should be good in communication with medical and scientific professionals, patients and study participants. Experience with systematic review, environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment and/or clinical medicine is considered a pre, just like having a driver’s license and willingness to travel for work (nationally). The ability to present a certificate of conduct (verklaring omtrent gedrag, VOG) may be a requirement.

The 3 PhD positions are shared between Amsterdam UMC and Utrecht University. Candidates will be working in the large Dutch strategic Public Private Partnership P4O2 (Precision Medicine for more Oxygen, www.p4o2.org). This consortium of seven Dutch universities and twenty private partners allows you to work in a multi-disciplinary team and offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with companies such as pharmaceutical industries and diagnostic companies. The Amsterdam group is based in location AMC at the department of respiratory medicine. In Utrecht you will be working for the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) and the department of environmental epidemiology.
