Job description

Nowadays, media are always present and can influence our behaviour in many ways. As a junior lecturer / PhD candidate, you will investigate the potential of mediated communication for improving well-being. You will gain substantial research skills as well as teaching experience, focusing on communication that can provide a positive contribution to addressing challenges related to health, sustainability, and politics.
This position is particularly suitable for researchers who are interested in combining a PhD project with a substantial teaching component during a period of 6 years. You will be expected to spend 60% of your working time on research within the Communication and Media research programme of the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI), with the aim to obtain a PhD. In addition, 40% of your time should be spent on teaching within the Communication Science education programme. You will also be expected to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (BKO in Dutch).
During the first three months of your contract you will write a PhD proposal, in collaboration with your supervisors, on a topic that aligns with the BSI’s Communication and Media research programme. Within this programme we investigate the potential of mediated communication for improving people's well-being. We focus on insights into the production, content and reception of communication that can provide a positive contribution to addressing contemporary challenges related to, for example, health, sustainability and politics. For example, we study how mediated communication can motivate people to adopt healthy and sustainable lifestyles and why and how people resist communication (undesired communication in particular). Moreover, we are interested in new technological developments in society (e.g. data-driven personalisation, interactive media) and the consequences (e.g. privacy concerns) these developments may have on persuasion processes.

Your educational responsibilities will be to teach, evaluate and improve courses at predominantly the Bachelor's level, with a focus on communication and media and/or statistics and methods courses. You will also supervise Bachelor's theses. Because a wide range of methodological approaches are used in our programmes (both qualitative and quantitative), methodological flexibility is essential.

Employer

The Communication and Media group consists of approximately 40 employees. Our main objectives are to study the social and psychological mechanisms underlying media use, media processes and media effects, while taking into account the economical, technological and sociocultural forces that influence the 21st century media landscape. We aim to apply these fundamental insights to develop strategies for improving people's well-being. A key role is played by recent developments in digital technology: we study innovative technologies and tools such as artificial intelligence, robotics and virtual reality in order to find ways to empower people to thrive in their multiple roles, for example as consumers, citizens or parents. Driven by these objectives, we focus on three communication themes: influence (commercial and prosocial communication), information (journalism and news), and entertainment (consumer community and culture).

The Behavioural Science Institute (BSI) is a multidisciplinary research institute and one of the three research institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Radboud University. Our researchers collaborate across the boundaries of psychology, educational science and communication science. Our mission is to empower people through an understanding of the foundations of human behaviour, by creating synergy between different paradigms and by facilitating craftsmanship, curiosity and connections in scientific research. BSI has seven research programmes covering three major research themes: 1) development and learning, 2) health and mental health, and 3) social processes and communication. BSI conducts fundamental as well as applied/translational research and provides excellent facilities and support for lab and field research.

Currently some 450 students are enrolled in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Communication Science. The study programmes focus on questions concerning the production, content, uses, and effects of mediated communication, with an emphasis on positive and innovative communication science. We also spend significant time on the professional development of students. We believe in autonomy-supportive teaching and encourage staff members to use innovative teaching and assessment methods. Both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes are taught in Dutch.
