Job description

Emerging ICT applications are extremely demanding and have surpassed the capabilities of today’s computational architectures and technologies. In order for computing systems to continue delivering sustainable benefits for the foreseeable future, alternative/unconventional computing architectures and paradigms have to be explored in the light of emerging new device technologies. Quantum computing, computation-in-memory, brain-inspired neuromorphic computing, and spin-wave computing are some alternative computing paradigms, while quantum dots, memristor devices, spintronic devices are promising emerging device technologies.

The mission of TU Delft's Quantum and Computer Engineering (QCE) department is to invent, design, prototype and demonstrate the potential of such alternative computing technologies by harnessing unique features of emerging devices, e.g., qubits, memristors, spintronics, and graphene. QCE research adapts a holistic approach in which it addresses the whole computing engine design stack (i.e., technology, circuit design, architectures, compilers, algorithms and applications) to maximize the computing efficiency, where the main focus is on the middle layers (circuit design, architectures and compilers). This research goes hand in hand with the research on dependability aspects such as testability and design-for-testability, reliability, and security.

The research in the QCE department is conducted and built based on strong public-private partnership and in close collaboration with world-leading companies (such as NXP, Philips, IBM, Intel, Fujitsu, Cadence, Intrinsic ID, KPN, Airbus, etc. ) and research centres and universities (such as QuTech (TU Delft’s worldwide leading research centre on Quantum Technology, Computing and Internet), TNO, IMEC, RWTH, EPFL, UPC, UC Berkley, TalTech, Polito di Torino, Pisa University).

QCE is inviting applications for an assistant or associate professor in the field of unconventional electronics and computing systems who is eager to carry out research on key topics such as system architectures, compilers and mapping methods, microarchitectures, and circuit designs. We will determine the precise area of research in consultation with you, taking your background and interests into account as well as the department’s research roadmap.

You will actively participate in multidisciplinary collaboration with QCE colleagues and our research partners. You will also contribute to the development and teaching of computing courses and educational programmes at BSc and MSc level and supervise PhD and MSc students, write project proposals, and participate in faculty committees.

Requirements

You are expected to have a research background and research interest in computing systems using emerging technology and related topics; examples are:

  • Quantum computing, in-memory computing, neuromorphic computing, spinwave computing, edge computing, and energy-efficient computing.
  • High-level synthesis and application profiling
  • Compilers and mapping algorithms
  • System architecture, microarchitecture development and design.

Furthermore, you need to have:

  • A PhD in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science or a closely related discipline, with outstanding academic credentials;
  • The ambition to be a future scientific leader in the area of unconventional computing;
  • An affinity with teaching, preferably with teaching experience at bachelor and/or master level and experience in supervising MSc and/or PhD students;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;

Experience in leading and managing research programs, and knowledge of quantum computing, quantum computer architecture, compilers and simulators, are a plus.

An appreciation for a culturally diverse environment and the ability to work in a team.

Conditions of employment

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.

Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (salary indication: €3548-€5922). Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines - electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science.
