In recent years, the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Maastricht University has been growing significantly. The faculty is active in high profile projects such as the Einstein Telescope Pathfinder and topics such as circularity, artificial intelligence, robotics, sensor engineering and future farming. For the latter, Maastricht University is developing a research facility in Venlo. This research facility consists of greenhouses and indoor climate cells. In addition, molecular and engineering laboratories are being developed.
As a technical manager, you will actively contribute to the building process and you will be responsible for the operational management of the facility. During the building process, you will carry out your work in close contact with the senior project manager(s) involved and the faculty board of FSE. When the facility is operational, you will report to the management of the institute.
The developments take place on the Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo. The infrastructure is part of the new Brightlands Future of Farming Institute. The institute focuses on research and education in the areas of healthy vegetables with optimal consumer characteristics and sustainable high tech production, specifically greenhouse technology. The facility will host researchers and students of existing and new educational programmes.
We are looking for a Technical Manager, who is:
Maastricht University is renowned for its unique, innovative, problem-based learning system, which is characterized by a small-scale and student-oriented approach. Research at UM is characterized by a multidisciplinary and thematic approach, and is concentrated in research institutes and schools. Maastricht University has around 20,000 students and 4,700 employees. Reflecting the university's strong international profile, a fair amount of both students and staff are from abroad. The university hosts 6 faculties: Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Faculty of Law, School of Business and Economics, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience. Faculty of Science and Engineering
The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) is home to several outstanding departments and institutions covering education and research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) as well as the liberal arts and sciences.
Through research at this new scientific institute, UM aims to contribute to a sustainable and circular agrifood sector. The institute's main focus is on healthy vegetables, optimal consumer characteristics and sustainable production. The Brightlands Future of Farming Institute focuses on genetics, cultivation and post-harvest physiology of vegetables and thus covers the entire innovation chain. It offers smart solutions for agrifood and greenhouse horticulture. The added value of fresh produce is increased by innovations in characteristics that match consumer trends such as sustainability, convenience, variety and health. In addition to focusing on modern breeding techniques, using 'plant functional genomics', R&D will take place in the field of production technology, more specifically greenhouse technology to consider and influence the system as a whole. This will be done by deploying and expanding knowledge in the field of A.I., sensor engineering and robotics, among others. The interaction between the genetic makeup of crops and the climate in which they grow will be optimally studied to ensure consumer attributes and quality. The institute ties in with UM's existing strengths and is in line with the triple helix approach, for example through collaboration at Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo.
