Job description

Utrecht University School of Economics (USE) is looking for a Lecturer/PhD candidate with a strong interest in macroeconomics, international economics, growth & development, environmental economics or current and future work-related challenges. 
You will develop both teaching and research skills and gain relevant working experience for your future (academic) career. Over a period of six years, you will conduct doctoral research and you will be involved in teaching activities. You will spend 60% of your time on research and 40% on teaching. The exact details of your schedule will be determined in close consultation between you, your supervisors and the education coordinators. You will also be given opportunities for training and development, such as the Basic Teaching Qualification and specialized courses related to your PhD research. Within the six-year period, the progress of your research and your teaching activities will be evaluated on predetermined moments.

The yet-to-be-determined dissertation topics fall within the research programme Multidisciplinary Economics and the themes Future of Work and Sustainability & Economic Development. In your letter of motivation we would like you to point out which topics appeal to you within this context. After the selection interviews, we will further discuss suitable possibilities with the selected candidate.

Requirements

We are looking for a talented researcher with a passion for teaching, who meets the following requirements: 
  • You hold a Master’s degree in economics, business economics, finance or a related discipline. A Research Master’s degree is preferred.
  • You are eager to conduct innovative and thorough research, resulting in a PhD degree within six years.
  • You have good research skills.
  • You enjoy involving other people and other fields/disciplines in your work.
  • You contribute to a wide range of courses and have affinity with the full spectrum of courses taught in U.S.E.’s Bachelor programmes.
  • You have good interpersonal skills. You can transfer your knowledge to students in an enthusiastic way.
  • You speak and write English fluently, and you are at least proficient in Dutch on a basic level, or you are willing to achieve this.
  • You are willing to start the 'Basic Teaching Qualification' course, in which you will (further) develop your teaching skills. We greatly appreciate it if candidates already hold this qualification.

Conditions of employment

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for a period of six years. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €2,846 and €4,490 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
