Department

The researchers working on this project are experts in the area of Stochastic Operations Research (SOR), the analysis of mathematical models and methods for the design, control and optimization of complex (stochastic) systems. The SOR group studies a variety of phenomena with as common theme the impact of randomness on system performance, both at the theoretical level, obtaining a deeper mathematical insight, and at the practical level by applying relevant knowledge to real-world phenomena and problems.

Twente Fire Brigade (TFB) is one of 25 regional fire services in the Netherlands governed by the law on safety regions. The brigade serves about 627,000 inhabitants in 14 municipalities. Improving fire safety, response to incidents as well as crisis and disaster management are the organization's main tasks. 24/7 preparedness is organized through a network of 29 fire stations with 1,000 colleagues, of which 700 are trained volunteers. In 2021 the brigade responded to approximately 4,000 incidents. The TFB positions itself as an innovative safety organization. In recent years it pioneered several ideas in the field of fire services like the use of drones in firefighting, development of a virtual reality suit for training of fire fighters, the start of a 'Risk factory' for educational purposes and the use of incident data as a resource for planning, educational and operational purposes. Their Twente Safety Campus serves as a training location for first responders, as facility for risk-education and as a safety field lab.
