The Maastricht Sustainability Institute (MSI) seeks to appoint a sustainability scientist with a strong social science profile to expand its existing team of scholars. Within the interdisciplinary field of sustainability science, MSI contributes to the understanding of societal transitions towards sustainability, combining a strong methodological focus with domain specific knowledge in areas such as energy provision, climate change and health, urban sustainability and circular economy.

We are looking for a person who is working on a research agenda that adopts a constructive critical perspective, has an inclusive stance on methodological rigour, and engages actively with current debates in sustainability science and society. As teaching will be part of your portfolio of activities, we seek a person who shares our enthusiasm in using problem-based learning (PBL) to shape the next generation of leaders in sustainability, in business as well as in other sectors of society.

More specifically, we are looking for a person with the following qualities:

·         deep knowledge of social science theorising related to sustainability transitions;

·         a track record of high quality publications in the field of sustainability science, or constituting fields such as innovation studies, political economy, business studies, governance and public administration, and environmental sociology;

·         experience with PBL is an advantage;

·         a Universal Teaching Qualification (UTQ/BKO) or equivalent;

·         proven experience with funding acquisition;

·         ability to work with a variety of methodological perspectives;

·         a focus on impact delivery through transdisciplinary approaches;

·         a compelling research agenda that is complementary with MSI and SBE

.         hold a PhD in sustainability science or a relevant other discipline

Depending on the level of expertise and experience we can offer a contract as either an assistant or an associate professor. For the assistant professor level remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for assistant professors (scale 11 or 12), with a starting salary in the range of € 3.974 - € 6.181 gross per month (based on a full-time appointment), depending on qualifications and experience. Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

For the associate professor level remuneration will be according to standard salary levels for associate professors (scale 13 or 14), with a starting salary in the range of € 5.506 - € 7.362 gross per month (based on a full-time appointment), depending on qualifications and experience. Each year the standard salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.

For both levels, you have to be willing to move to (the vicinity of) Maastricht. Depending on your personal situation, you will be eligible for an allowance for moving costs.

The Maastricht Sustainability Institute (MSI), based at the School of Business and Economics (SBE) of Maastricht University (UM), wants to contribute to a better world by addressing sustainable development problems and challenges through scientific research and high-quality education. A combined approach of sustainability assessment, innovation for sustainability, and governance for sustainable development is at the heart of the institute. MSI research explicitly embraces complexity and normativity, rather than simplifying it, and it takes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to generate societal impact.
