PhD Position Medical Sciences
As a medical doctor you want to make a difference in the lives of people with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease: now and in the future. That is why you consciously choose to work as a PhD fellow in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology of the UMCG, a dynamic department where research and clinical practice are intertwined. We solve clinical questions through our translational clinical research programs. We aim to improve patient care with the results of our scientific approach. We believe that optimal therapy for every patient with diabetes and/or chronic kidney disease can be found. As a PhD fellow and medical scientist we will support you to pursue your ambition. Clinical research within the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology focuses on personalized medicine for the treatment of renal and cardiovascular complications of type 2 diabetes. Principal investigators within the department are involved in numerous clinical trials and large cohort studies to develop new methods of tailoring medications using biomarker based approaches and improve clinical trial designs by integrating novel methodological techniques.

Applications are invited for a 3-year full-time PhD position at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University Medical Center Groningen starting from January 1st 2023. To support ongoing research and clinical trials the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology is soliciting for a 3-year full time PhD position for a medical doctor.

The candidate is expected to:
- responsible for recruitment and monitoring of patients in clinical trials;
- responsible for operational conduct of clinical trials according to Standard Operating Procedures to assure quality of research;
- carries out statistical analyses or database development. This may include assisting lead biostatisticians for clinical trials performed in cardio-metabolic conditions;
- write study reports and scientific publications;
- stays current on relevant research via statistical or medical training, self-study, internal training and courses, external conferences and courses, for example.

We offer a unique, multidisciplinary working and learning environment with possibilities to develop expertise in a diversity of research areas and involvement in ongoing large international clinical drug trials. You will be working in an energetic and enthusiastic team of more than 30 researchers from diverse backgrounds. The group has an extensive network, both nationally and internationally.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic medical doctor or epidemiologist with a Master's degree or equivalent in medical sciences or epidemiology. Experience in the conduct, analysis and interpretation of clinical trials is required. The candidate has knowledge and experience with statistical software. We expect the candidate demonstrates professional competence and is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Sufficient proficiency in Dutch language is required. The candidate has experience in English writing.

Candidates who have (almost) completed their Master’s degree are invited to respond.

The UMCG has a preventive Hepatitis B policy. The UMCG can provide you with the vaccination, should it be required for your position.
In case of specific professions a ‘Certificate of Good Conduct’ is required.

Conditions of employment

Your salary will be a minimum of € 2.631,- gross per month in the first year and a maximum of € 3.188,- gross per month (scale PhD) in the final (3th) year, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
You will first be appointed for a period of 12 months. After a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended for the remaining part of the project.
