Job description

As part of our growth ambitions, we seek to appoint a new assistant professor who is passionate about entrepreneurship and is committed to research and teaching excellence in this exciting field. The new hire will play a key role in strengthening our entrepreneurship section and expanding its research and teaching programs. Doing so requires familiarity with startup and/or corporate entrepreneurship and having an active stream of research on related topics. The position is embedded in a supportive international work environment that is characterized by a strong commitment towards research productivity, teaching innovation and teamwork.

Your duties
  • Initiate and perform high-quality research in the field of entrepreneurship, culminating in top tier publications and grant acquisitions
  • Teach and design courses, both at the bachelor level (e.g., the SBE Minor Entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship courses offered at other faculties of VU) and master level (e.g., the joint VU-UvA Master in Entrepreneurship, as well as supervise bachelor, master and PhD theses
  • Contribute to the management of the Department / School committees

Requirements

  • a PhD in Management or a related field in the social sciences (completed or with a fixed date for the defense)
  • fluent in English (knowledge of Dutch is not a requirement, but is considered a plus)
  • prior publication experience in top management or entrepreneurship journals
  • teaching experience (e.g., as course instructor, thesis suoervisor, etc.)
  • a university teaching qualification (BKO) or are committed to obtaining it during the tenure track.
Candidates without a completed PhD but who expect to finish in the near future are also encouraged to apply. So are current assistant professors with a few years of experience. They might complete the tenure track early.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 6 years.

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience.

The initial employment contract as assistant professor will be for a period of 6 years, with the possibility of obtaining a permanent position (tenure). The position involves research (50%) and teaching (50%). At the end of the second year, a performance evaluation will take place. The Tenure Track Committee will review your file, including the evaluation and advice on the continuation of your tenure track. In the fifth year, the Tenure Track Committee will review your file in order to decide upon the tenured assignment based on the assessment criteria of the Tenure Track system SBE.

The Assistant Professor will enhance and contribute to the Department's teaching and research activities and be member of the entrepreneurship section. The research program of this section focuses on core topics in the field of entrepreneurship such as the creation and growth of new firms and social enterprises, the psychological and cognitive underpinnings of entrepreneurship, corporate entrepreneurship and strategic renewal, and the dynamics of regional clusters and entrepreneurial ecosystems. Important outlets for the group are Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.
