Job description

The Department of Anthropology and Development Studies at Radboud University is seeking an assistant professor. The research and educational programmes of this department focus on the relationship between diversity and inequality. The prospective assistant professor will be expected to contribute to these research and teaching programmes.

As an assistant professor you will teach courses in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programme in Anthropology and Development Studies such as Philosophy of Science, Current Debates on Human-Nature Relations, and Ecological Livelihoods and Environmental Justice. You will give lectures and seminars, and supervise students preparing Bachelor's and Master's theses. Furthermore, there will be opportunities for you to participate in the interdisciplinary Research Master's programme in Social and Cultural Sciences.

You will particularly conduct qualitative (e.g. ethnographic, mixed-methods) and multidisciplinary research on issues related to the central research programme on diversity and inequality. More specifically, you will contribute to the theme 'Diversity, Markets, and Natural Resources' that focuses on the following question: 'How are different forms of diversity and inequality within and between societies related to the functioning of markets and associated changes in access to natural resources?' Possible research topics include the politics of changing relationships between people and natural resources; differences in cultural understanding of what can be marketed, including land and the disruptive notion of nature as a resource; and local perspectives on how natural resources and the more-than-human environment are governed in a critical context of environmental and climate change.

The Department's research programme is a joint programme, hence you will be expected to work in a cross-disciplinary manner, exploring the connections between Anthropology and Development Studies. You should also be able to obtain external funding for your research and attract graduate students.

Your tasks will include carrying out and coordinating excellent teaching in Dutch/English; inspiring and motivating students; being a conscientious supervisor of internships as well as BA and MA theses; performing and publishing top-quality research; applying for external funding by submitting research proposals; collaborating with researchers from the ADS department and the other departments at the institute and with external scholars; contributing to the societal debate; being an inspiring staff member with excellent communication skills; and developing a network of national and international academic and non-academic partners.
