Job description

The program

The EngD program is a 2-year post-MSc technological program with a focus on technological and process design. This program contains an educational part, that will be followed at the University of Twente, and an acoustic design project that will be carried out in cooperation with ASML. The educational program will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be tailored as much as possible to the design project.

The project

The focus of this project is on the design of ASML’s DUV scanner systems and specifically on meeting the stringent requirements of noise induced vibrations.

For a large and complex system, such as a DUV scanner, it is vital that one is able to divide possible problems into smaller problems and sequentially solve each of these subproblems separately. This can be done if the performance of one substructure does not inflict the performance of the other. For noise inside a scanner this generally does not apply; the noise generated in one substructure could propagate and thus affect the performance in the other structure . The mutual dependency should therefore be taken into account.

This EngD project addresses this conflict in the design process between the mutual dependency of the substructures versus the ability to design substructures independently from other substructures. The project should deliver a design process to easily account for the this two-way coupling such that a modular model of the scanner can be obtained. The improved design process will be tested in a smaller test setup which is to be designed by the EngD and this design process will be evaluated on the test setup.
