Job description

Financial institutions play a crucial role in the context of shifting global power dynamics and international challenges (climate emergency, artificial intelligence, armed conflicts, migration). In this project, you will work on the topic of human rights due diligence responsibilities of financial institutions. The goal of the project is to identify and normatively ground the responsibilities of financial institutions to acquire evidence and knowledge about their stakeholders.

We are looking for excellent research master students who are interested in normative questions concerning global finance and human rights. The ideal candidate has an excellent academic track record and extensive experience with normative and/or conceptual research methods.

The PhD position is part of an M20 project of the Rudolph Agricola School for Sustainable Development, joining the economics and philosophy faculties of the University of Groningen. You will work under the supervision of staff from the Faculty of Economics and Business (dr. J.A.M. de Grefte, prof. dr. B.P. de Bruin) as well as from the Faculty of Philosophy (prof. dr. F.A. Hindriks).

Requirements

We are looking for candidates with

- a research master’s degree in Philosophy (or be near completion) with a demonstrable interest in (international) Finance;
- a strong academic track record;
- a background in conceptual/normative research methods;
- strong analytical skills;
- English writing and presentation skills.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 48 months.

The full-time appointment is temporary for a period of in principle four years, under the condition of a positive assessment at the end of the first year. The gross monthly starting salary is €2,770.-, which increases yearly to a maximum of €3.539,-. Based on the gross salary you will receive an additional 8% holiday allowance each year in May, and an additional 8.3 % end of year bonus in December.

Preferred starting date: as soon as possible.
