Job description

Are you looking for a challenging and meaningful job in the analysis of nano-meso-macro structured materials using electron microscopy? Then this position as an Electron Microscopy Specialist (1.0 FTE) with the "Physical Chemistry" research group and the 'Center for Multiscale Electron Microscopy' (CMEM) at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is exactly what you are looking for!

Join the Department of Chemical Engineering at TU/e! Our leading research at the Center for Multiscale Electron Microscopy focuses on the structure and properties of molecules and materials and the processes to create them. We develop sustainable technologies to address societal challenges in energy transition and health. Participate in groundbreaking research and high-level education in an inspiring environment.

As an Electron Microscopy Specialist, you will work in a research team alongside colleagues and scientific staff, assisting PhD candidates and postdocs in developing new molecules, materials, and processes for sustainable applications. Together with your immediate colleagues, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining the faculty's electron microscopy equipment, including user training in instrument operation and data acquisition (cryoTEM, STEM, EDX, electron tomography), sample preparation (cryo, microtomy), data analysis, and developing advanced imaging workflows (liquid phase EM). CMEM also contributes to supervising practical components of the faculty's revamped bachelor curriculum.

Do you want to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions for our society while advancing yourself as a researcher and educator? Apply now for this challenging position at TU/e!

We are looking for an enthusiastic team member with at least a Bachelor's degree (preferably MSc or PhD) in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related discipline. A previous track record in Electron Microscopy is a plus.

You will collaborate with our team of experienced electron microscopy staff but will also be capable of working independently. Your specific responsibilities will include:
  • Daily operation and maintenance of TEM equipment.
  • Training users in microscope operation and data acquisition (TEM, STEM, EDX).
  • Training users in sample preparation (cryo, microtomy).
  • Assisting users in data analysis.
  • Developing advanced imaging workflows.
  • Organizing and overseeing all aspects related to the use of chemicals in the electron microscopy lab, covering the entire process from purchasing, using, storing, to disposal.
  • Supporting practical sessions for bachelor's and master's students.
  • Ensuring safety aspects in the laboratory (providing safety instructions/training, refresher courses, monitoring safety, assessing the safety aspects of (new) materials, procedures, and setups, including the preparation of safety reports and risk assessments).
