Job description

You will be part of a large, leading referral and clinical centre for pediatric ophthalmology. You will work alongside a skilled and dynamic team of multiple ophthalmologists and five orthoptists. We also welcome applications from ophthalmologists who recently completed their training or are in the final stages of their training.

 

What you will do:

We are united by the mission of ensuring every child can live as happy and healthy a life as possible. In this role, you will work at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC) and the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital (WKZ) in close collaboration with the Princess Maxima Center (PMC). Your responsibilities will include providing ophthalmic care for children, with opportunities to perform strabismus surgery.

You enjoy working in an academic setting and want to make an active contribution to the department. An important aspect of your work will involve collaborating in team settings, including meetings and joint consultations with various (sub)specialities at UMC, WKZ, PMC, and the Bartiméus Foundation. You will participate in (inter)national workshops and conferences and have the opportunity to grow scientifically and academically. Additionally, you will contribute to training ophthalmologists, students, and other professionals. A fellowship, either in the Netherlands or abroad, is an option.

What you bring

We are looking for a dedicated ophthalmologist (or in the final stages of training) with a keen interest in pediatric ophthalmology.

  • You possess strong social, communicative, and interpersonal skills.
  • You have a proactive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to ongoing professional and personal development.
  • Alongside providing excellent care, you aspire to be among the (international) leaders in pediatric ophthalmology. You have a strong interest in research, education, and training.
  • You are empathetic and capable of navigating an impactful environment in close contact with sick children and their families.

Conditions of employment

  • A salary between €9534 and €13767 gross per month (UMS scale), based on a full-time employment contract (36 hours).
  • A one-year employment contract with the prospect of an employment contract for an indefinite period.
  • Part-time appointment in combination with a position elsewhere is negotiable.
  • The position is for 0.8-1.0 FTE.
  • End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and holiday allowance of 8%.
  • Favorable pension scheme with ABP: we pay 70% of the premium.
  • Collective labor agreement à la carte: the possibility to choose additional employment conditions in exchange for gross salary, such as for the purchase of a bicycle, reimbursement of your internet subscription and memberships.
  • There is room for scientific development.
  • Following a fellowship at home or abroad is one of the possibilities.

Department

The Department of Ophthalmology at UMC Utrecht comprises all sub-specialties. Each year, more than 75,000 consultations and 3,000 surgeries are performed. The Department focuses on top-referral and top-clinical care, in which complexity and variation are high. The outpatient clinic is organized along three lines of care: child-orbita-neuro-ophthalmology, posterior segment (uveitis, medical retina, vitreoretinal surgery), and anterior segment (corneal pathology, complex cataract surgery, glaucoma). The department's research is anchored in the UMC Utrecht’s strategic spearpoints: Child Health, Cancer, Regenerative Medicine, Infection and Immunity, and Circulatory Health.
