Job description

The Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC) is recruiting a senior academic for its strategic programme of research and innovation in clinical neurotechnology. This programme is embedded in the internationally leading activities in deep brain stimulation (DBS), invasive neurophysiology and brain computer interface (BCI) development of the department of neurosurgery and collaborating departments within the Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute (MHeNs).

Job Description
The post-holder will conduct research and development work within our strategic programme in clinical neurotechnology, particularly in the areas of neuromodulation and neurophysiology and/or neuroimaging. The post will support the strategic aim of improving closed-loop and adaptive neuromodulation technologies. The post-holder will fulfil leadership roles in both research and education and be actively involved in the supervision of PhD candidates. The post-holder will liaise closely with a multidisciplinary team (neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, imaging scientists, neuroscientists, engineers) working on the development and clinical application of new neurotechnologies. Specific tasks include:
  • Conduct internationally leading research in (invasive) neurophysiology;
  • Contribute to the development of closed-loop DBS and BCI systems;
  • Engage with clinicians from MUMC and stakeholders from industry;
  • Acquire non-commercial and commercial funding to support an academic programme in clinical neurotechnology;
  • Train PhD candidates and Masters students in clinical neurotechnology in the context of the MHeNs graduate school;
  • Contribute to the teaching programme of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences;
  • Contribute to the generation and exploitation of intellectual property.

Requirements
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and team worker with international experience in academia and/or industry and fulfil the following criteria:
  • PhD in neuroscience, engineering or another relevant discipline.
  • Track record of publications in clinical neurotechnology.
  • Excellent understanding of neuroscience methods, including neurophysiology and neuroimaging.
  • Excellent computational skills.
  • Track record of successful funding acquisition.
  • Experience and interest in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and PhD (co-)supervision.

What we offer
As an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:
  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 11/12 according to UFO profile Assistant professor, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €4492,00 and €6986,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 or 18 months (depending on your employment history) with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
