The Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) is looking for a lecturer (docent) in Book Studies (Boekwetenschap). The successful applicant will teach courses in the Minor Boek, Boekhandel en Uitgeverij and the Book and Digital Media Media Studies track of the MA Media Studies. Our programmes introduce students to the present, past and future cultures of the book, whether through working with medieval manuscripts and early printed incunables in the world-leading collections of Leiden University Library, through learning cutting-edge methodologies for the study of digital text, or by critically exploring framings of historical and contemporary key players in the book world. We invite enthusiastic teachers with an interest in modern book studies to apply for this position.

Tasks
  • Teaching courses in the field of modern and contemporary book studies;
  • Supervision and second readership of MA theses;
  • Supervision of BA internships and papers;
  • Participating in the academic community of the Institute.

Your profile
  • You have completed a MA and preferably a PhD in modern book studies (for example, publishing studies; book history of the post-industrial print era; library studies; reading practices; 20th- / 21st- century book cultures) or in a related field (e.g., literary studies, history) and can demonstrate that you have conducted research in the field of modern book studies;
  • You are capable of teaching BA- and MA-level courses on contemporary publishing studies, notably our existing course offerings Uitgeven Anno Nu (Minor, Boek, Boekhandel en Uitgeverij) and Dynamics in Scholarly Publishing (MA, Book and Digital Media Studies);
  • You are aware of issues, viewpoints and innovative methods within the area of modern book studies;
  • You have an interest in digital humanities methods and/or the implications of digital media transformations for how we study the book;
  • You have experience in teaching courses on a BA-level, which you can prove with course evaluations and/or a Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO), University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) or equivalent
  • You have experience in supervising students in thesis- or comparable long-form writing projects;
  • You are an innovative and inspiring teacher, with an inclusive approach to education, experience in teaching beyond your research focus, and a strong commitment to teaching a diverse community of BA and MA students;
  • You are a clear communicator and team player, enthusiastic about collaborating across disciplinary boundaries;
  • You possess the following competences: conceptual capacity, environment orientation, presenting skills, result orientation;
  • You have (near) native proficiency in English and are (preferably) able to deliver teaching in Dutch.

The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University is a unique international centre for the advanced study of languages, cultures, arts, and societies worldwide, in their historical contexts from prehistory to the present. With its 995 employees, the faculty provides 27 Master's and 25 Bachelor's degree programs for more than 7,000 students at locations in Leiden and The Hague.

The Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society (LUCAS) is one of the seven Academic Institutes of the Faculty of Humanities. Our members study cultural production over the course of two millennia, from classical antiquity to our contemporary world, and teach in programmes ranging from Classics and Book History to Literary Studies, International Studies and Art History. We offer
We offer a 0.7 FTE position as Lecturer (Docent) for seven months. Time for development as a teacher is included in the position, but please note that this position does not include research time. The salary is in accordance with collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch Universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The gross monthly salary is € 3.345 to € 6.148 (scale 10 or 11) for a full working week. Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. International candidates are encouraged to apply but must be willing to relocate to the Netherlands for the duration of the appointment.
