The Dept. of Geoscience & Remote Sensing at TU Delft is looking for an experienced data manager to oversee the different data acquisition and distribution systems related to the Ruisdael observatory for atmospheric sciences .

Job description

You will integrate a small team of 2 scientists, 2 technicians, and 1 support staff member to ensure that information flows timely and securely from a large number of weather sensors at different locations in the Netherlands to TU Delft and, from there, to individual users and larger data repositories such as the KNMI data platform, 4TU and ACTRIS Cloudnet. In addition to managing and publishing the datasets, you will be expected to:

  • Contribute to the development of new custom-made software solutions for automatically acquiring, processing, visualizing, analyzing and publishing the collected data for scientific purposes.
  • Monitor the ETL pipelines and implement automatic quality control mechanisms to ensure the highest quality and availability of the collected data.
  • Coordinate data management activities with our local (TU Delft), national (KNMI) and international project partners and actively contribute to the advancement of open science, data and software practices.
  • Manage the computers/servers within the Ruisdael network, together with support from the TU Delft ICT.
  • Provide technical support to staff/students for the installation of software and data management tasks related to Ruisdael, including during measurement campaigns.
  • Write detailed documentation about existing workflows, software and datasets.
  • Handle requests for information about datasets and data access.
  • Participate in Ruisdael/ACTRIS meetings, workshops and projects.

Requirements

We are looking for a creative, tech-savvy person with a background in data/software engineering, data management or equivalent. The main skills we are looking for are:

  • Implementation and management of automated data pipelines (with Apache Airflow)
  • Good knowledge of Linux, version control (Git), containerization (Docker)
  • Good programming level in Python. Experience in hardware development using RaspberryPi (or equivalent) computers would be a plus.
  • Good knowledge of relational databases, data formats and data storage/transformation tools. Experience in using the netCDF format would be a plus.
  • Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work in a small team, coordinate efforts, show initiative and prioritize.
  • Good level in English (writing and speaking).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 2 years.

  • A salary based on scale 10 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a minimum of €3.345,- and a maximum of €5.278,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
