Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences in collaboration with Tilburg School of Economics and Management has a job opening for a postdoctoral researcher in AI algorithms for electronic warfare (EW) and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) in the defense domain (1.0 FTE). The Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence Department at Tilburg University together with the Netherlands Defense Academy invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position in EW & ISR optimization.

The Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence Department at Tilburg University together with the Netherlands Defence Academy invites applications for a fully-funded postdoctoral position in the interdisciplinary area of mission optimization. This position is in collaboration with the Data Science Center of Excellence of the Ministry of Defence of the Netherlands. The project consortium brings together a number of pioneering experts in the field and aims to develop and reflect on (AI) solutions to how to deal with new challenges in mission optimization of the Dutch armed forces.

The postdoctoral candidate will work on a project developing and evaluating algorithms in the domain of electronic warfare and/or intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The project will be led by prof dr. Roy Lindelauf (NLDA, TiU), and prof. dr. Marie Postma (Cognitive Science & Artificial Intelligence Department at Tilburg University). The project aims to integrate concepts, methodologies, and information derived from operations research, data science and if applicable cognitive science. Its primary objective is to create advanced algorithms for EW and ISR aspects of specific mission types, assess the reliability of these models, and validate them through applicable use-cases.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in operations research, computer science or artificial intelligence, data science or a related field. 
  • Background in operations research, game theory or econometrics (preferred).
  • Knowledge of data science in general as well as practical experience with conducting data science analyses with good programming skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and good academic writing skills.

Conditions of employment

  • A full-time position.
  • Dutch citizen, fluency in Dutch, excellent command of English
  • The selected candidate will receive a contract for 24 months.
  • A salary ranging from a minimum of €3.345 to a maximum of €5.278 gross per month for full time employment, based on UFO profile Researcher 4 and salary scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. 
  • A holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually).
  • Researchers from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary (the 30% tax regulation). The University will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.
  • Assistance in finding accommodation (for foreign employees).
