Job description

You will be working for the European Renal Association (ERA) Registry, a registry for patients with kidney failure who are treated with dialysis or a kidney transplant. Each year the ERA Registry receives data on these patients from about 35 countries in Europe. Check out the website: https://www.era-online.org/en/registry/.

As a PhD student, you will conduct research in the field of epidemiology of patients with kidney disease who are treated with dialysis or a kidney transplant. Your research will focus on international differences in the occurrence and outcomes of these patients. We are currently expanding the ERA Registry database with additional donor and kidney transplantation variables and you will also use this dataset in your PhD research.
  • You will analyze available data from the ERA Registration in the field of epidemiology on the occurrence and outcomes of patients with kidney disease who are treated with dialysis or a kidney transplant in European countries.
  • You will write scientific papers on this data and the publications will form the basis for your PhD thesis.
  • In addition, you will contribute to the data collection of the ERA Registry via national registries, the publication of the ERA Registry annual report and the related scientific article.
  • During your PhD project you will have the opportunity to follow several courses, for example in the field of epidemiology and on scientific writing.

Requirements

  • A MSc degree in the field of epidemiology, medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, medical informatics or (biomedical) health science.
  • A strong motivation to obtain a PhD in epidemiological research.
  • Enthusiasm to participate in data collection process.
  • A customer-friendly accurate way of working.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in the English language.

  • A contract for the duration of the project (4 years) with a probation period of 12 months.
  • Salary scale OIO: € 3.017 to € 3.824 gross per month based on full-time employment (depending on education and experience) and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. Calculate your net salary here. For medical doctors (BIG-registered) salary scale 10.2 applies: € 3.824 to € 5.504 gross per month.
  • Holiday hours: 186,4 per year for fulltime and a possibility to save additional hours.
  • Pension accrual with BeFrank, a modern, comprehensible and fairly priced pension.
  • For >7 km each way, 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs and, for private transport, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km each way.
  • Do you prefer walking or cycling? Take advantage of our good bike scheme. Moreover, you will receive a reimbursement of €0.18 per km.

The Department of Medical Informatics (in Dutch: Klinische Informatiekunde (KIK)) at Amsterdam UMC (location AMC) is committed to improving health care. To this end, it conducts many research projects in the field of patient care evaluation, some of them using information technology. In addition, it is responsible for teaching students for the bachelor and master of Medical Informatics and of (healthcare) professionals in the eLearning Master Health Informatics. Several medical registries are located at the department, including, the ERA Registry. This Registry is embedded in a research group focusing on the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease.

Currently the team consists of several senior/postdoctoral researchers, two PhD students, a data manager and a secretary who work intensively together and with nephrologists from different European countries.
