Job description

At the Laboratory of Experimental Virology (Department of Medical Microbiology, Amsterdam UMC), both basic and translational HIV research is performed.

Basic research focuses on several steps in the viral replication cycle, such as regulation of viral gene expression and HIV RNA processing, as well as on dissection of the biology of the HIV reservoir in infected individuals. Translational research focuses on the development of an HIV vaccine and novel strategies to inhibit HIV replication. Basic and translational research is intermingled to complement each other.

This project focuses on dissection of the active HIV reservoir (HIV-infected cells that transcribe viral RNA) in people with HIV and on pre-clinical testing of novel strategies towards an HIV cure.

We are looking for a highly motivated research technician who is interested in innovative research towards an HIV cure.
  • You need to be able to work in a multidisciplinary team and have affinity/experience with molecular virology.
  • You will work on a research project that has both basic and translational aspects.

We are looking for a research technician with the following experience:
  • Bachelor or Master's degree or equivalent education;
  • Knowledge and experience with PCR-based and cell culture assays;
  • Accurate and attentive to detail;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Enthusiastic and highly motivated;
  • Pro-active and independent with good analytical skills;
  • Team player with strong communication skills.

  • Salary scale 7M: € 2.975 to € 4.214 gross based on full-time employment (depending on education and experience) and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. Calculate your net salary here.
  • Holiday hours: 186,4 per year for fulltime and a possibility to save additional hours.
  • Pension accrual with BeFrank, a modern, comprehensible and fairly priced pension.
  • For >7 km each way, 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs and, for private transport, €0.18 per km up to a maximum of 40 km each way.

The departments of Medical Microbiology & Infection Prevention of locations AMC and VUmc have recently merged into one joint department headed by location AMC. This is the first important step in realizing the academic ambitions that the new department has set for the field of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention in Amsterdam, with regard to both patient care and research and education & training. After the merger, a sizeable department was created with over 270 employees and specialized diagnostic laboratories for virology, bacteriology, mycology, parasitology in addition to central laboratories for molecular and serological diagnostics. In addition, the department includes a joint team for Infection Prevention, several research laboratories and three national reference laboratories.
