4TU.ResearchData is a research infrastructure, community and training provider whose mission is to enable researchers from science, engineering and design disciplines to make a global impact with research data and software. We provide a trusted digital repository which support Findable, Accessible, Interopable and Reusable (FAIR) data and software by offering curation, sharing, long-term access and preservation. The repository has a broad community of users and supporters who advance FAIR data and software practices.

4TU.ResearchData is governed and led by a consortium of four technical universities in the 4TU.Federation (TU Delft, University of Twente, TU Eindhoven and Wageningen University & Research) and is hosted by TU Delft.

The 4TU.ResearchData repository uses in-house free and open source software called Djehuty (https://github.com/4TUResearchData/djehuty). Our vision is to co-develop this software with our 4TU.ResearchData community of researchers and research support professionals, such as research software engineers and data managers. At 4TU.ResearchData we strongly believe that community-driven development is essential for innovation and sustainability of our services.

As Free and Open Source Software Engineer at 4TU.ResearchData you will develop the data repository infrastructure to support researchers in effective sharing of their research outputs, primarily research data and software.

You will work closely with other colleagues from 4TU.ResearchData to maintain, scope, develop and implement new functionalities to best support emerging needs of the research community. You will also collaborate with other colleagues on joint open source projects and on establishing best practices for scholarly communication infrastructure.

Your tasks and responsibilities:
  • Maintain and extend the data repository to serve the needs of the research community while preserving its integrity and security
  • Research and design software solutions within the current architecture, and extend the architecture where/if needed;
  • Communicate design and implementation choices to the open source community;
  • Collaborate in national and European projects to advance the sustainable and integrated scholarly communications infrastructure in the Netherlands and in Europe;
  • Review patches of internal and external contributors to the data repository;
  • Collaborate and support other colleagues within and outside the team, as appropriate and relevant.

Requirements
  • Full-stack web development awareness;
  • Experience developing and maintaining software systems with Python;
  • Experience working with community-driven open source projects;
  • Experience with GNU/Linux, Python, HTML/CSS, Javascript, Git;
  • Awareness of the importance of Free and Open Source software;
  • Awareness of the FAIR principles;
  • Good communication and team-working skills;
  • Good command of English and willingness to learn Dutch if not yet proficient;
  • Experience with SPARQL and RDF is a plus.

Conditions of employment
  • Duration of contract is 1 year Temporary with prospect of permanent.
  • A job of 36-40 hours per week.
  • A salary based on Schaal 11 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a salary between €4492 - €6148 gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
