The successful candidate will conduct internationally-recognised Artificial Intelligence research in the field of data-driven algorithmic decision making or automated planning and scheduling, supervise PhD and MSc research students in the field, acquire external research funding, teach and develop new education at the undergraduate and graduate levels in Computer Science, and perform department and university management tasks. The candidate is expected to actively collaborate with other researchers from academia as well as industry to realise this ambition.
Relevant topics of research include, but are not limited to, the development of machine learning techniques in combination with advanced algorithmic techniques for decision-making problems occurring in transportation, energy, and health domains; the intersection of data-driven and knowledge-based planning for these domains; and the explanation of data-driven single- and multi-agent planning decisions. Candidates working on related challenges in AI-driven decision making are also welcome to apply.
The successful candidate has obtained a PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Operations Research or related field; has research ability as demonstrated through a strong publication record in top-tier venues; and is an enthusiastic team player with the ambition to strengthen and expand the research of the Algorithmics group. Preferably, the candidate has experience in providing education at the university level, and has demonstrated the ability to obtain research funding through the acquisition of national or international research projects.
Fixed-term contract: Tenure.
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.
Within the faculty, the Department of Software Technology (ST) comprises the EEMCS Faculty research groups working on core computer science and engineering topics. The department is responsible for a large part of the curriculum of the BSc and MSc programmes in Computer Science as well as the MSc programme in Embedded Systems. The department’s research mission is to perform excellent research at an internationally-recognised level in the design, construction and analysis of complex, concurrent and cooperative computer and information systems. Inspiration for the research topics is derived largely from technical ICT problems in industry and society. The Department moved into new office and lab space in 2018.
The Algorithmics group is a section in the ST Department. The group focuses on designing and understanding the fundamental properties of planning and coordination algorithms for intelligent decision making in real world applications, where appropriately using real-world data, handling uncertainty and preferences, and dealing with multiple parties are particularly important challenges. We aim to apply techniques from reinforcement learning, mechanism design, constraint reasoning and meta-heuristics to problems in transportation, energy, and health. To be successful in these application domains we pay attention to handling large amounts of available data as well as to the development of advanced algorithmic toolboxes based on generic methods and techniques. Our work regularly appears at venues such as AAAI, AAMAS, ICAPS and IJCAI. More information about the Algorithmics group is available at www.alg.ewi.tudelft.nl.
Located in a charming college town, TU Delft is the largest and oldest public technological university in the Netherlands.
