The assistant professor position is the entry-level professor position at a university. You can develop into an associate professor and full professor. Several Dutch universities offer ‘tenure tracks’: a career programme for talented scientists who have the ambition to become a full professor.
A tenure track takes approximately ten years in total and you often start with a temporary assistant professor appointment. During the programme you get guidance in developing your teaching and management skills and you will be evaluated on progress. After several years successfully going through the programme you can grow into a permanent associate or full professor position. Tenure tracks have a severe selection procedure.
