EngD Position on Automotive Radar Antenna Design

This EngD project will be conducted within the MID4automotive project, see description below. In MID4automotive, a fully functional photonically integrated automotive radar prototype will be developed. The prototype will be integrated in 3D-MID technology to achieve direct integration into the car bumper, i.e. the radar will become part of the bumper rather than a module that is attached to/behind the bumper. This allows for more cost-effective solutions due to the reduction in assembly parts, construction and maintenance costs.

The goal of this EngD project is to develop the antennas for the radar prototype. This requires close interaction with the MID4automotive consortium partners, especially Fujikura Technology Europe, who is leading the overall demonstrator development, and the technology providers. One of the main challenges will be the integration of the antennas into the bumper in a way that dirt and water on or scratches in the bumper will not significantly deteriorate the radar performance.

Embedding of the EngD project in the MID4automotive project

The EngD project is funded through the European project MID4automotive with partners from the Netherlands and Germany. This project will address the integration challenges of the application domains automotive radar and connectivity by the use of 3D-MID technology. 3D-MID is a production and integration technology that allows for three-dimensional arrangements of components and great flexibility in the shape of the final module due to additive manufacturing, similar to conventional 3D-printing.

The consortium includes world-leading European companies, research institutes and universities. Among these are the end user, an automotive OEM, and technology providers, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers and system verification specialists. Together, they are targeting international markets worth billions of euros and where this project is a key enabling collaboration effort to achieve their business goals.
