Job description

Background
Exposure-based treatments are effective in reducing anxiety symptoms in anxiety disorders. However, the relapse rate after successful treatment remains high. In this project, we aim to test whether a novel approach can effectively prevent relapse in a fear conditioning model.

Research method
In a human fear conditioning learning model, this project examines whether a modified extinction learning protocol can effectively prevent the return of fear. Fear will be indexed behaviorally (e.g., avoidance responses), cognitively (e.g., threat expectancy ratings), and physiologically (e.g., skin conductance responses).

Job description
As a junior researcher, your tasks will include:
  • Recruiting and coordinating participants from the Erasmus University Rotterdam using university channels and social media.
  • Collecting data on fear responses (e.g., threat expectancy ratings, skin conductance responses) in a human fear conditioning model.
  • Collaborating with the research team and Msc students on the project logistics
  • Preprocessing and analyzing the collected data.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented candidate with
  • A master’s degree in a relevant field, including psychology, health sciences, or neuroscience.
  • Keen interest in experimental psychopathology and the understanding of exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders.
  • Strong affinity with associative learning and computational modelling is desirable. Prior experience with fear conditioning or psychophysiology is advantageous but not essential – training will be provided.
  • Substantial knowledge of statistical methods and analytical skills
  • Excellent proficiency and communication skills in English.
  • Work collaboratively in a dynamic team to meet project timelines.

Conditions of employment

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

The start date of this position is May 2025 and you will be based at Campus Woudestein, in Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB). This position is for 0.7fte. The salary is € 3.378 gross per month Scale 10.0 on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. The contract is offered for a period of 1 year.
