The two positions have been created as part of ISS’s ongoing ambition to diversify the composition of its academic staff with recruits from the Global South. ISS has identified key partner countries and, in particular, for these two positions, we seek applicants from the Global South whose work focuses on Ecuador and/or Colombia.

The two positions are meant for early-career academics, that is, those with a recent (or soon to be completed) PhD and offer the possibility of pursuing a career at ISS while creating or enhancing strong connections with academic institutions in Ecuador and Colombia. The successful candidates will be embedded in the institute’s research program and will work with a team of researchers who will ensure that the candidates receives support from within the organization and are enabled to participate in research, teaching and engagement with institutes in Ecuador and Colombia. The expectation is that the successful candidates will play a leading role in developing further collaborative activities in these two countries, such as joint research and PhD supervision, double degree MA programmes, exchange of researchers and students, and engagement with alumni.

The successful candidates will be expected to carry out high-quality and societally-relevant research in the broad areas of:

(1) Macroeconomics of development, with expertise in areas such as financial flows, financialization, trade. Candidates with a heterodox economics perspective are encouraged to apply.

(2) Environment and natural resource use and management, with expertise in areas such as the natural resource curse, extractive industries and environmental justice. Candidates with a political economy of development perspective are encouraged to apply.

The candidates will have a teaching base in the Major in Economics of Development (ECD) and/or the Major in Agrarian, Food and Environmental Studies (AFES). They will also be expected to contribute to institute-wide teaching efforts, such as in research methods.

We are looking for candidates who meet the following requirements:

·         A recent (soon to be completed) PhD in a relevant field of social sciences (such as development studies, development economics, macroeconomics, human geography, sociology, gender studies, international relations, ecological economics);

·         Comfortable and experienced with both qualitative and quantitative/econometric methods (especially for the Macroeconomics position);

·         Networking abilities;

·         Documented extensive academic experience in Ecuador and/or Colombia;

·         An active publication strategy and/or a good publications record (in line with career stage);

·         Ability to acquire research funding;

·         Demonstrated capacity and skills in teaching MA students and supervising MA research papers in multicultural environments;

·         Possession of BKO (Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs) certificate/Teaching in Higher Education Certificate or willingness to obtain this qualification after joining ISS;

·         Ability to conduct or contribute to advisory and capacity building/development programs and to attract external finance for such programs;

·         Evidence of social and academic valorization, including e.g. contributions to public debate, policy briefs, stakeholder engagement;

·         Team spirit and willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and projects.

The selected candidates will be offered a contract at the level of Assistant Professor, starting as soon as possible, with the possibility of tenure and promotion to the rank of Associate Professor after 6 years upon successful performance as judged according to specified tenure track conditions.

To help develop candidates with the tenure track from assistant to associate professor, they will be offered:

o   Relatively more time for research (65%) in the first three years of the appointment with the remainder for teaching, valorisation and management;

o   Mentoring/coaching.

In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidates’ experience and corresponds to scale 11, which is between € 3.637,00 and €4.978,00 gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits.

The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS)
