In the broader context of the programme Social Resilience and Security, we seek to bring together interdisciplinary insights in the field of transgressive behaviour, with representatives from five faculties (Faculties of Governance and Global Affairs, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Archaeology). In this programme, we seek to provide a broad and deep understanding of what actually concerns transgressive behaviour; how to study it; how to explain the occurrence of various types of transgressive behaviour; how to intervene, and how to assess the effects of interventions. These effects include, but are not limited to, the effects of social (individual) interventions, the use and objectives of legal interventions and the effects of policy interventions.
 
You will have the opportunity to develop as an academic, to hone your research and methods skills, as part of an enthusiastic, interdisciplinary and university-wide team, within a thriving research institute and faculty.

Key responsibilities

•  Conduct original research and complete a PhD-thesis within the framework of the programme;
• Participate in the programme’s academic research network, as well as in other Dutch and international research networks;
• Analyse data using state-of-the-art (statistical and/or qualitative) techniques;
• Contribute to the development of new theoretical insights and concepts within the programme;
• Publish in international academic journals, both individually and together with the wider project team;
• Present research results at (inter)national conferences and meetings and actively disseminating research findings to key stakeholders;
• Contribute to the organization of meetings and conferences for/with the programme;
• Contribute to existing educational programmes, courses and working groups within the Institute.

• MSc (preferably 2-year Research Master) in criminology, psychology, sociology, public health, anthropology, political science, or another relevant discipline;
• Strong (quantitative and qualitative) research skills;
• Experience with software programmes such as SPSS, R, Atlas,ti or NVivo;
• Excellent English, both in written and oral form. Command of the Dutch language is not a prerequisite for applying;
• Strong skills in presenting research findings both orally and in writing;
• Interest and enthusiasm for research in the field of security, interventions, and violence;
• Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTC). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he/she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years;
• A ‘can do’ mentality and a team player spirit.

The appointment as a PhD candidate will be initially for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of progress and skills development, leading to the successful completion of a PhD thesis. The start date is 1 August 2020 (with the option of an early start from June 1). Salary range from € 2.325,- to € 2.972,- gross per month (pay scale P, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) is a scientific institute that focuses on interdisciplinary research and education within the international scientific field of security studies. ISGA analyses and studies issues in a coherent way from their local transnational and global impact.  ISGA operates from The Hague, the third major city of the Netherlands, centre of national governance and International City of Peace.
 
At the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, we study the aetiology, scope, patterns and explanations of interpersonal violence, and the impact these events and their perpetrators have on public order. In doing so, we adopt a multi-dimensional, interdisciplinary perspective, in which we use and adapt concepts from sociology, public health and public policy, criminology, victimology, forensic psychology and pedagogy – moving past traditional mono-disciplinary approaches. In our research, we seek to better understand when and how to prevent (future) violence, and to aid efforts to reduce the violence burden on society.
