Job description

The scientific domain of the position regards both education and research activities and addresses organizational and management issues relevant for the introduction and effective use of technological innovations in health care. The focus is on organizational analyses of how technology (medical records, patient portals, supporting eHealth and technologies) functions, can be used and be developed to contribute to the improvement of health services delivery.

Together with colleagues from the department and the institute, the candidate conducts and acquires empirical research to evaluate and/or co-design technological innovations from an organizational perspective. This involves participation in national and international research networks. The candidate is expected to teach on subjects regarding organization and management of technology, but also to participate in teaching on other subjects related to the management and organisation of health care delivery. Teaching activities consist of participating in bachelor and master courses and supervising students who work on their bachelor and/or master thesis. In addition, the candidate may contribute to MBA and executive courses.

Requirements

The candidate holds a PhD in a social science and has a track record of international peer reviewed publications in the domain of the position. The candidate can also demonstrate excellent teaching skills. Ability to teach in both Dutch and in English are required. Erasmus University especially values assistant professors to be result oriented, to combine a societal and scientific orientation, and to have strong conceptual abilities.

Conditions of employment

We offer an appointment as assistant professor for 1 year, which can be extended to a total duration of 3 years when performance is satisfactory. Remuneration will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Fulltime work will pay according to Dutch University Labour Agreements, from € 3.746 to € 5.826 max per month (scale 11 – 12), depending on experience. In addition, there is a holiday allowance, a set end-of-year bonus and generous opportunities for taking time off. Fulltime is considered to be 38 hours per week.

Department

The department of Health Services Management & Organisation

The scientific focus of the department broadly covers the domain of Health Services Management & Organisation. The teaching is mostly organized around the MSc program in Healthcare Management, which is the largest program in this domain in Europe, and the BSc program in Health Sciences (Gezondheidswetenschappen, Beleid & Management Gezondheidszorg). Courses taught for instance address Organisational Behavior, Quality & Safety, Innovation, Integrated Care, Operations Management, and Financial Management.

The research of the department is aligned with the teaching, and prioritized around three shared strategic themes which are interrelated and of particular societal and scientific relevance in the domain of Health Services Management & Organisation: 1) The co-creating role of patients and professionals in health services, 2) Health Information Technology driven innovation, and 3) Changing organizational models. Our research has an empirical improvement focus. While experienced in evaluative studies, the department therefore increasingly engages in design and action research.

In recent years, the department has published in leading journals such as BMJ Quality & Safety, Health Care Management Review, Health Policy, JMIR, Social Science & Medicine and PLOS ONE, and won various scientific awards. Current research projects take place in The Netherlands, Europe, and across the globe in countries such as China and Colombia.
