What you are going to do
Why do many people develop chronic lung diseases? Would it be possible to predict who are at high risk? To find answers to these questions, the PhD candidate of this project will be involved in setting up a cohort of persons at risk of developing lung disease. The main task of the PhD student is to analyze –omics data (e.g. microbiome, transcriptome, epigenome) of the persons in the cohort. Also, the candidate will combine the –omics data with big data from exposome measurements and CT scan data. The PhD candidate will write publications, and will have the opportunity to present work on (inter)national conferences, and to work in close collaboration with different companies.

What we expect from you
The PhD candidate will work in collaboration with experts in the respiratory field to identify the key molecular mechanisms and biomarkers that could predict the early development of respiratory diseases, identify potential drug targets, and reveal personalized treatment and monitoring approaches for studied subjects in the future. The candidate should hold a Master of Science (MSc.) degree in bioinformatics/data science/biostatistics (or medicine/pharmacy/other (para)medical or comparable background as long as he/she has the right experience), with proven knowledge about and strong interest in both the biological processes as the informatics side of the data. The candidate should have practical experience with data analysis (using R, and Python) and previous experience in working with/analyzing multi-omics data is a significant advantage. The ideal candidate can propose new techniques and analyses, looks forward to working on a project where the data is obtained during the PhD and is able to explain complex findings in an understandable way to audiences that are less familiar in this field. Furthermore, the candidate should adequately communicate with medical and scientific professionals, patients and study participants and should be able to communicate fluently in English, both in speech and writing. We are looking for someone who is willing to help in the project where needed, to obtain the data that is needed for these analyses (if needed/necessary). The ability to present a certificate of conduct (verklaring omtrent gedrag, VOG) may be a requirement.

• The maximum gross monthly salary based on a 36-hour work week is between € 2.495,- and € 3.196,- (scale 21 CAO UMC), PhD students who have a Master’s degree in Medicine are appointed in scale 10, CAO UMC ( € 2.911 – € 4.615,-).
• The base salary does not include holiday pay (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%).
• We offer a contract for 3 years.

Respiratory medicine

Where you are going to work
The PhD position is available at the department of respiratory medicine in Amsterdam UMC, location AMC. The PhD student could start as soon as possible, but should start in December 2021 the latest. You will be working in the large Dutch strategic Public Private Partnership P4O2 (Precision Medicine for more Oxygen, www.p4o2.org). The PhD student will work in collaboration with a Postdoc on the –omics data. This consortium of seven Dutch universities and twenty private partners allows you to work in a multi-disciplinary team and offers the unique opportunity to collaborate with companies such as pharmaceutical industries and diagnostic companies.
