Job description

The Department of Psychology, Education & Child Studies (DPECS) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam invites applicants for an Associate professor position Methodology and Statistics (M&S), which can be combined with theoretical and empirical work in the field of (Clinical) Child and Family Studies (CCFS). As an associate professor you will contribute to research (40%) and teaching (60%) in the sections of CCFS and M&S of the department. The CCFS section is involved in research and teaching in e.g. mapping the daily lives of families and children using innovative research methods, such as new interview techniques, observations, and experience sampling. The M&S section is involved in research and teaching in the field of applied statistics in general. The teaching part will mainly consist of statistical courses (M&S) and theses supervision (CCFS). Your research will be embedded in a renowned interdisciplinary team that focuses on intensive longitudinal data analysis using Experience Sampling Methods in a broad context of developmental, clinical, cognitive, and organizational research.

Both sections M&S and CCFS consist of highly motivated colleagues ranging from PhD candidates to assistant, associate, and full Professors. Together they enthusiastically coordinate and teach the pedagogical, psychological, and statistics courses in the Bachelor and Master programmes of DPECS. We are looking for an experienced researcher with a statistical background who wants to set up a strong research line in the field of Experienced Sampling Methods (ESM), including methods developed for time series data, for example Dynamic Structural Equation Modelling and Continuous Time Modelling.

This interdisciplinary position is created to study and improve the validity, reliability, and analytical possibilities of these techniques as well as to strengthen its potential theoretical and social impact of the research, for instance, making interventions more effective and find innovative solutions to solve social issues. In your position you will also take a (co-)lead in further developing our expertise centre both (inter-)nationally as well as within Erasmus University by future embedding in the Graduate School. Collaboration with researchers from other disciplines is highly valued, and we are explicitly looking for candidates with an interest in such interdisciplinary collaborations, especially on this topic of (intensive) longitudinal data.

Your tasks will include:

  • Publish in internationally recognized, peer-reviewed academic journals in the area of psychology, pedagogical sciences, behavioural sciences, methodology and/or (applied) statistics;
  • Acquire (joined) research funding;
  • Disseminate scientific knowledge;
  • Teach statistics courses (Bachelor and Master, a.o. Psychometrics), give workshops ESM for staff and for the Graduate school (EGSH);
  • Supervise theses in the field of (clinical) child and family studies;
  • Take a (co-)leading role in developing an expertise centre in the field of Experienced Sampling Methods (ESM) both (inter-)nationally as well as within the Erasmus University by future embedding in the Graduate School.

Requirements

  • You have a PhD in statistics, psychological methods, psychometrics or in behavioural and social sciences with a demonstratable affiliation with teaching statistics;
  • You have excellent (C1 level) written and oral skills in Dutch and English, both languages are necessary for teaching;
  • You have prior teaching experience and the proven ability to inspire students;
  • You are in possession of a Basic Qualification Teaching (BKO) or you are willing to achieve this qualification;
  • You have high quality scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals;
  • You have experience in carrying out scientific research independently; and are able to acquire external funding to sustain and strengthen your line of research;
  • You are a connecting leader, have a clear vision on academic leadership and experience in supervising more junior staff members, such as PhD-students and postdocs;
  • You are a frontrunner in Open Science, and have the willingness or proven ability to act at the forefront of scientific improvement.

Conditions of employment

An internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with good working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The start date of this position is as soon as possible and you will be based at The Department of Psychology, Education & Child Studies (DPECS) in Rotterdam. The successful candidate will be offered a one year contract with Erasmus University Rotterdam. This contract will, in case of positive assessment, be turned into a permanent employment contract. In accordance with the conditions applied at Erasmus University Rotterdam as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU) of the Dutch universities, the salary is dependent on the candidate’s experience and is set at a maximum of CAO NU scale 13 with a minimum of  € 5.275,- and a maximum of € 6.421,- gross per month, on a fulltime basis. In addition, EUR pays an 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year payment of 8.3% and offers excellent secondary benefits, and a very generous leave scheme. Furthermore, EUR is affiliated with ABP for the pension provision and we offer partially paid parental leave, fully paid extended birth leave for partners, a personal education budget, work-life balance coaches and more.
