Job description

Management Accounting & Control and Financial Management in healthcare are of increasing importance because of the complex challenges caused by innovations in financial governance, management, and reimbursement models. Among these challenges are the increasing pressures on healthcare budgets observed worldwide. The advances in availability of financial information within and across organisations create important new opportunities to improve decision making and value creation in healthcare. The candidate is expected to teach and do research within this broad domain. The candidate can participate with his/her specific expertise in national or European research programs, for example on the application of time-driven activity-based costing in health care. Teaching includes basic courses in business economics at the bachelor and pre-master level, a master course in financial management and supervising students with their thesis. The candidate participates in acquiring research funds and conducts state of the art research, in close collaboration with colleagues from the department, from ESHPM and from other universities.

Requirements

The candidate holds a PhD in financial management, management accounting, business economics, quantitative business research, or a comparable field. He/she builds up a track record of international peer reviewed publications, preferably also partly in the domain of the position. The candidate can demonstrate excellent teaching skills, for instance through a University Teaching Qualification (BKO). A (future) ability to teach in Dutch and in English is required.

Conditions of employment

We offer an appointment as assistant professor for 1 year, with the possibility of a permanent position. Remuneration will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Fulltime work will pay from € 3821 to € 5943 max per month (Scale 11-12), depending on experience. In addition, there is a holiday allowance, a set end-of-year bonus and generous opportunities for taking time off. Fulltime is considered to be 38 hours per week.

The Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) was founded in 1982. Department

The department of Health Services Management & Organisation

The scientific focus of the department broadly covers the domain of Health Services Management & Organisation. The teaching is mostly organized within the MSc program “Healthcare Management” (Zorgmanagement), as well as the BSc program “Gezondheidswetenschappen, Beleid & Management Gezondheidszorg” (Health Policy & Management). Courses taught within the MSc program for instance address Financial Management, Health Services Operations Management, Organisational Behavior, Healthcare Procurement & Value Chain Management and Health Services Innovation.

The research of the department is aligned with the teaching and prioritized around three shared strategic themes: 1) The Co-creating role of patients in health services, 2) Health Information Technology driven Innovation, and 3) Changing Organisational Models. The overarching theme is Value-Based Health Care. The research themes are interrelated and of particular societal and scientific relevance in the domain of Health Services Management & Organisation. Our research has an empirical improvement focus. While experienced in evaluative studies, the department therefore increasingly engages in design science and action research.

In recent years, the department has published in leading journals such as BMJ Quality & Safety, Health Care Management Review, Health Policy, JMIR, and Management Science, and won various scientific awards. Current research projects take place in The Netherlands, Europe, and across the globe.

The staff of the department includes 3 Full and 2 Endowed professors, 4 Associate Professors and 6 Assistant professors. Together with the PhD students, the staff will grow to around 20 FTE in 2025.
