Job description

We offer a PhD position in arithmetic geometry at Utrecht University. As a PhD student you will carry out mathematical research in the context of the research project p-structures on moduli spaces of abelian varieties and Drinfeld modules”, funded by an NWO Vidi grant. This project focusses on arithmetic properties of (supersingular) abelian varieties and Drinfeld modules over finite fields and their moduli spaces. You will be part of the research team of Dr. Valentijn Karemaker and work under her supervision.

The PhD project will be carried out at the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University. During your PhD you will have light teaching duties.

Employer

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major strategic themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Pathways to Sustainability. Sharing science, shaping tomorrow.

At the Faculty of Science, there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us on YouTube.

The Mathematical Institute in Utrecht has a very active number theory and algebraic geometry research group: Utrecht Geometry Centre. In addition, you will have the opportunity to interact with the research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” based at Utrecht, Groningen and Leiden.

The mathematical community in the Netherlands is tight-knit and you will have ample opportunity to participate in national events (including those organised by the consortium “Rational points: new dimensions”). Our group members interact regularly with experts at other Dutch universities. These interactions are also facilitated by the monthly Intercity Number Theory Seminar, the Intercity Geometry Seminar, the twice-annual DIAMANT Symposium, and the twice-annual GQT School and Colloquium. We also keep in touch with our colleagues in Belgium through the “Getaltheorie in het Vlakke Land” seminar and the Belgian-Dutch Algebraic Geometry Seminar.

Diversity and inclusion:

We commit to operating in accordance with the values of diversity and inclusion. Everyone deserves to be respected and feel at home in our research community, regardless of differences in background, experiences, perspectives, and identities. These values are reflected by Utrecht University’s diversity policy.

Diversity among group members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of research. Therefore, applicants from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.
