- This vacancy is only for internal candidates - We are looking for a postdoc researcher in effective AI-based shared decision-making in healthcare.
Are you interested in doing ground-breaking research into the relationship between technology and society? The national Gravitation research program Public Values in the Algorithmic Society (
AlgoSoc) is opening an exciting postdoc position in our Health sector! The Gravitation program is an initiative by the Dutch government to support excellent research in the Netherlands. The funding is reserved for scientific consortia that have the potential to rank among the world's best in their field. The key challenge will be to optimize the benefits of automated decision systems (ADS) based on AI while minimizing the risks to public values.
The main aim of this subproject is to examine how we can optimize the desired effects of ADS applications and protocols in preventive health or healthcare while minimizing the potential threat to public values such as autonomy, privacy, security, integrity, solidarity, fairness, inclusiveness, transparency and equity. Responsible and effective lifestyle apps and clinical decision support systems can provide personalized feedback to citizens, patients, and healthcare practitioners, and aggregated information to public health campaigners and policymakers; used as surveillance tools by insurance companies, lifestyle-monitoring smartphone apps can compromise values. In advancing specific ADS-based eHealth applications, institutional protocols, and national and international policies, we will focus on treatment, by using automated prediction facilitating patient-provider interaction, in particular shared decision making. The project takes a transdisciplinary approach, actively involving stakeholders (e.g., end-users such as patients and healthcare providers) as co-researchers and designers.
The postdoc will be situated in the department of
Communication Science, program group Persuasive Communication, of the University of Amsterdam. With more than 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students, Communication Science is among the largest departments at the University of Amsterdam with an outstanding international reputation.
What are you going to do? The leading research question of this subproject is; “How can we design effective ADS-based shared decision-making for prevention strategists, policy makers, patients, and healthcare providers while safeguarding the potential threat to public values and what is their effectiveness?” Potential methods to be used are co-design (citizen & stakeholder co-creation), (field) experiments, think-aloud studies, mobile tracking, data donation in SDM and/or (automated) text/conversation analysis.
By joining AlgoSoc you will - develop and execute a research proposal based on the above description of the subproject;
- take part in a state-of-the-art prestigious programme, innovative in focus and approach, which aspires to have impact in academia as well as society;
- have the opportunity to actively engage and help shape a scientific program with a 10-year lifetime, and make use of the many opportunities for a wide variety of engagement and societal impact activities;
- have the support and space to develop your own research within the framework of the program;
- participate in a consortium of internationally renowned scholars, and join a nationwide peer network, with many opportunities to engage and develop your career;
- benefit from a well-funded future-oriented training and development programme, including personal-professional development.
