Job Description
As the complexity of knowledge continues to grow and higher education becomes more flexible, students need to learn how to identify gaps in their knowledge and plan, monitor, and control their learning in a self-regulated way. However, contrary to a common misconception, self-regulated learning does not happen by itself but needs to be supported by teachers. But, how do teachers actually perceive their role and responsibility in learning students how to learn? What do teachers know about effective support for self-regulated learning? And how could faculty development support teachers in supporting their own and students’ self-regulated learning?

Join us in this research endeavour to answer these questions and develop a teacher training helping teachers and students to get back at the steering wheel of their learning.

Responsibilities of the PhD candidate could include, but are not limited to:

• Designing and implementing research studies focusing on teachers’ role in supporting self-regulated learning.
• Collecting, analysing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data
• Developing and evaluating a teacher training or faculty development initiative for supporting self-regulated learning
• Preparing research findings for publication in academic journals and presentation at conferences.
• Collaborating with faculty, staff, and other research team members.
• Participating in departmental meetings and contributing to the overall project development.

Requirements
We are looking for an intrinsically motivated PhD candidate with a (research) master of science (MSc) in education, psychology, health or any related domain, with an interest in educational research. A team-player with strong communication skills in Dutch and English. Being creative, flexible, and independent and having experience with (educational) research is an advantage.

What we offer
As PhD candidate at SHE on supporting teachers and students in self-regulated learning at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

• Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2770,00 and €3539,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
• An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
• At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
