Explore the potential of Generative AI and Large Language Models in interactive settings with a Ph.D. at Maastricht University.

Job Description
Generative AI and Large Language Models in Interactive Settings
Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) are rapidly evolving into pivotal tools across a spectrum of societal applications. From enhancing customer service with intelligent chatbots to aiding professionals in fields like text editing and software development, these technologies are on the cusp of becoming ubiquitous digital assistants for a wide array of knowledge work. The specific effectiveness of these tools, however, varies greatly depending on the nature of the task at hand.

In this innovative project, we aim to probe deeper into the functionalities and broader implications of LLMs in both cooperative and competitive contexts. Imagine scenarios where these technologies facilitate and transform interactions, such as a collaborative effort between a teacher and a learner, both augmented by AI, or a negotiation setting where buyers and sellers use AI to forge agreements. We seek to explore effective strategies for integrating Generative AI in such interactions and assess its impact on the outcomes.

Your Role:
  • Investigate and innovate on how LLMs can be employed to enhance and transform everyday interactions within various settings.
  • Contribute to a dynamic research environment where your ideas will help shape the future applications of AI in social contexts.

Requirements
We are looking for a visionary candidate with a solid foundation in data science and AI, coupled with a keen interest in social sciences that examine human and institutional interactions—areas like behavioural economics, political science, psychology, or educational sciences might be particularly relevant.

We encourage you to bring your own unique perspectives and ideas. The direction of your PhD project can be tailored to leverage your previous experiences and areas of interest, allowing you to pioneer new ways of applying these advanced technologies.

  • An employment contract for a period of 18 months with a scope of 1.0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 2.5 years will follow.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it.
