The Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) at the Tilburg Law School – Tilburg University has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in law. The researcher will conduct research on how the large-scale advent of Artificial Intelligence systems impacts the protection and enforcement of fundamental rights such as the right to privacy and data protection and freedom of expression.

Tilburg Law School is looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Fundamental Rights and Artificial Intelligence within the TILT department. The role involves conducting both doctrinal and empirical research (such as interviews and observations) independently, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Eleni Kosta and Dr. Marco Bassini. The researcher will actively participate in research activities related to the intersection of data protection and Artificial Intelligence, among other topics, working on the European Project CONSENTIS and on the personal grant of Dr Bassini, RetrAIn. Responsibilities include co-authoring publications (including project deliverables, book chapters, law journal articles, and blog posts), supporting the organization of workshops and seminars, participation in project meetings and calls, and engaging in dissemination activities for the projects. On ad hoc basis, the candidate can be assigned minor educational tasks. As a member of TILT, the researcher will participate in departmental meetings and research initiatives, embracing TILT’s interdisciplinary approach.

  • PhD degree in law, or near to submitting the PhD thesis in law, ideally on a topic relating to technology and fundamental rights;
  • Excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by publications in English and/or teaching activities in English (written and spoken command of other languages is a plus); 
  • Ability to collaborate with non-academic partners, exchange ideas and communicate knowledge to non-expert audience;
  • Didactic and managerial skills;
  • Experience with organizing workshops, lecture series and similar events;
  • Possession of scientific integrity and willingness to contribute to an open and diversified culture of excellence;
  • Ability to supervise students in writing their Master theses in Law & Technology and the ability to read and grade Master theses on a variety of topics in case ad hoc educational tasks will come up;
  • Prepared to live in the Netherlands and to be present at Tilburg University at least 2 working days a week in line with TILT’s hybrid policy office hours and commit to integrate in the environment provided by the TILT department and the Tilburg Law School.

For this position, we offer:

  • A position based on 0,8 – 1,0 fte (32 - 40 hours per week);
  • This is a vacancy for a temporary position in accordance with Article 2.3 paragraph 5 of the CLA for Dutch universities. You will be given a temporary employment contract for the duration of 36 months.
  • A salary of minimum €4.332 and maximum €5.929 gross per month for full time employment, based on UFO profile Researcher 3 and salary scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Tilburg University uses a neutral remuneration system for salary scaling that is based on relevant education and work experience;
  • Vacation allowance (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%);
  • Vacation days (41 days for a 40-hour work week);
  • Full reimbursement of commuting expenses for sustainable travel: walking, biking and public transportation;
  • Moving allowance;
  • Options Model for benefits and reimbursement of expenses;
  • Employees from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a tax-free allowance of 30/20/10% of their taxable wages. We will apply for this reimbursement for you;
