Are you passionate about haemostasis and advancing the understanding and care for persons with a bleeding disorder of unknown cause with a societal impact? Join our interdisciplinary team as a PhD candidate in the BDUC-iN study!

Job Description
Study summary
Over half of individuals referred to a haemostasis expert for evaluation of their bleeding symptoms, receive a diagnosis of bleeding disorder of unknown cause (BDUC) when standard tests fail to identify a haemostatic disorder. These patients experience similar bleeding symptoms and risks as those with known coagulation disorders (like von Willebrands disease), affecting their quality of life. Lack of clear guidelines lead to uncertainties about follow-up, treatment and family planning in this patient group. In the BDUC-iN study we will evaluate healthcare, patient reported outcomes and quality of life (QoL) of BDUC patients and investigate the best diagnostic strategy and treatment options. Furthermore we will investigate the underlying mechanism of bleeding with innovative diagnostic tests, multi-omics and fundamental research. Main study endpoints are: results of questionnaires on healthcare, patient outcomes and patient experiences; number of persons diagnosed with a haemostatic defect detected with innovative laboratory tests; development of pathophysiological based treatment plans; identification of biomarkers and haemostatic modifiers of bleeding with a multi-omics (genetic, proteomics) approach; an artificial intelligence driven prediction model for bleeding and a cost-effective algorithm for bleeding evaluation. All BDUC patients registered or investigated in 6 Dutch Haemophilia Treatment Centres (HTCs) will be included.

We offer a position for a PhD Candidate for the prospective BDUC-iN study. In close collaboration with your supervisors and the current 2 PhD candidates (in their last 1-2 years), you will be responsible for the implementation of the study in the HTCs. This entails recruiting, including and follow up of participants, conducting measurements and collecting data, analysing data, and drafting scientific papers. In the meantime, you will analyse data from the retrospective BDUC-iN cohort. Additionally, you will be tasked with communicating and disseminating research findings to various audiences, including the BDUC-iN working group. Your work will involve publishing research results in esteemed international journals and presenting them at recognized international conferences. Furthermore, you will engage in collaboration with the international BDUC consortium. Participation in the comprehensivehaemostasis training program, clinical care and guidance of other students in their scientific internships (e.g. master medicine, biomedical science) is also expected. Ultimately, this position encompasses working towards a doctorate.

Job Tasks:
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews.
  • Manage and analyse data from existing BDUC cohorts in the retro-BDUC-iN study.
  • Coordinate the multicentre prospective study, including METC approval and implementation in all HTC’s, scheduling, logistics, and communication with participating centers.
  • Work closely with the BDUC-iN working group and other researchers/PhD students.
  • Participate in regular research and multidisciplinary patients meetings in MUMC+
  • Include patients, collect data, administer questionnaires and conduct patient interviews.
  • Assist in designing and implementing data collection protocols for the prospective study and maintain detailed records.
  • Analyse data and identify biomarkers and haemostatic modifiers.
  • Prepare reports, write scientific papers, and present findings at conferences.
  • Assist in writing grant proposals and securing funding.
  • Participate in seminars and workshops to disseminate knowledge and gain feedback from the scientific community.

Requirements
  • A Master's degree in a related field (e.g., Medicine, Biomedical Science).
  • Experience working with human subjects and patients.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Basic statistical analysis skills and proficiency in relevant software.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Dutch.
  • Willingness to travel to international network events and consortium partners.

What we offer
As PhD candidate for national Study on Bleeding Disorders of Unknown Cause (BDUC-iN) at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:
  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile PhD, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2872,00 and €3670,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.

You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. Organisation of bleeding disorder of unknown cause in the Netherlands
In October 2022, the Bleeding Disorder of Unknown Cause in the Netherlands (BDUC-iN) working group, was established. Chaired by Floor Heubel-Moenen (co-promotor), and in close collaboration with SYMPHONY (symphonyconsortium.nl), this group includes representatives from all academic haemophilia treatment centers and fundamental researchers from the SYMPHONY consortium. The first action of this group was to merge data from three existing BDUC cohorts (MUMC+, Erasmus MC, UMCU) into the retrospective BDUC-iN study (METC 2023-0047), in order to have a strong basis for pilot analyses, hypothesis formation and longitudinal analysis. The working group is now preparing the prospective BDUC-iN METC study protocol for which a PhD position is now vacant.
