Job description

Do you like:
  • a diverse job in an academic setting in which you will have impact on students with an innovative education programme
  • working closely with students and NGOs aiming at defending fundamental rights?

Then, the function of Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Amsterdam is just the thing for you!

What are you going to do?
At the Amsterdam Law School, students are offered an Experiential Learning programme unique in the Netherlands. Each Master’s programme offers courses from what is collectively known as the Amsterdam Law Practice (ALP), in which students are asked to apply their knowledge of the law to questions from actual practice and to reflect on this experience. The law clinics are known as the Amsterdam Law Clinics (ALC) and comprise eight different thematic legal clinics, ranging from the Business & Human Rights Clinic to the Fair Trials Clinic. Besides working on real life cases for clients, students participate in overarching, interactive workshops/seminars.

For the Amsterdam Law Clinics we are looking for a Clinical Teaching Fellow with experience in human rights and in clinical and academic legal education. The ideal Clinical Teaching Fellow is a law graduate with experience as a legal practitioner. The Clinical Teaching Fellowship is an exceptional opportunity to engage with legal practice and at the same time work in academia.

The Clinical Teaching Fellow is part of the Amsterdam Law Clinics team. The Clinical Teaching Fellow will support the Director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics in teaching the Amsterdam Law Clinics seminars and other related matters. In addition, the Clinical Teaching Fellow will supervise and coordinate several clinical projects/cases. Due to changes in the curriculum and availability of clinical projects, the tasks of the Clinical Teaching Fellow may change, however, the main tasks of the Clinical Teaching Fellow will be:
  • supporting the director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics in planning the Amsterdam Law Clinics’ seminars and in further developing the seminar’s curriculum;
  • conducting part of Amsterdam Law Clinics’ seminar’s curriculum, such as lectures on legal writing and oral skills and rounds sessions;
  • heading the Fair Trials Clinic and supervising the students involved in monitoring criminal cases against human rights defenders and journalists in Türkiye;
  • publishing of law journal articles in relation to clinical education (together with the Director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics);
  • assisting the Director of the Amsterdam Law Clinics in the organization of events (e.g. expert meetings, roundtables, panel discussions);
  • performing administrative and organizational tasks for the Amsterdam Law Clinics, including assisting in funding applications and external communications (website, social media, etc.); and
  • working as part of a team.

What do you bring?
We are looking for someone with a passion for education and law and who wants to contribute to the formation of the next generation of lawyers. Besides this, you have:
  • a law degree with an outstanding record;
  • at least three years of prior experience in legal practice or human rights related work;
  • strong organisational and communications skills;
  • an excellent command of English and Dutch, both verbal and written; and
  • a commitment to working intensively with students.

The following background and interests are encouraged and a plus:
  • prior teaching experience;
  • knowledge of, and experience in, the field of human rights; and
  • engagement with civil society.
