The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Sustainable Ruminant Health.

Job description

Do you want to drive innovation in sustainable livestock farming? Utrecht University is seeking a full professor in Sustainable Ruminant Health to lead research on animal health and welfare in evolving production systems. Join our team to shape the future of sustainable ruminant health with access to state-of-the-art facilities and strong academic and industry partnerships.

Your job
Livestock farming is in transition in the Netherlands, in Europe and worldwide. This transition is the result of various developments: increasing societal attention for the environmental effects of livestock farming and for animal welfare, more focus on preventive health and holistic systems thinking and rapid technological innovation.

In this transition, animal health is of crucial importance. Consequently, there is a need for skilled veterinarians who understand the position of the animal in the changing production systems and for research to support the livestock sector both in the Netherlands and globally with answers to questions related to animal health and welfare that result from the changes described above.

In this fascinating but also challenging landscape, we have a position for a full professor in Sustainable Ruminant Health. This chair leads the Sustainable Ruminant Health (SRH) team, which is embedded in the Population Health Sciences department of the faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The Chair holder is responsible for research and societal impact in the field of ruminant health.

SRH is committed to sustainability of ruminant health in a broad sense, by working on practical research questions related to ruminant health within the transition of livestock farming. The team has strong ties with the University Farm Animal Practice, one of the the largest ruminant veterinary practice in the Netherlands, and other academic and industrial partners. Within the department, there is access to excellent facilities, including a large and modern ruminant clinic, research stables, an organic dairy farm and a sheep farm, and state of the art laboratory facilities.
