Job description

We are looking for a proactive Data Scientist who takes initiative, is strong in analysing and querying sources, and enjoys working with academics to discover trends in TU Delft's various research domains.

The Team Research Analytics within TU Delft Library supports researchers and faculties in collecting and querying various data sources and provides expertise on analysis and visualisation tools.

Academic publications are the main source for identifying global research trends. Non-academic publications and mentions on various media and community channels are also considered indicators of research relevance.

The expertise of the Team Research Analytics is deployed across faculties and university services throughout TU Delft, such as by providing insight into collaboration opportunities with other universities and how the fields of research of universities, faculties and individual researchers relate to research carried out in different parts of the world.

We are looking for someone to join our team for 32-40 hours a week.

As a Data Scientist at TU Delft Library, you play a crucial role in providing essential information based on data analysis and in analysing national trends in academic publishing and how we relate to global trends at TU Delft.

In this role, you work closely with your Research Analytics colleagues and you are a member of the Scholarly Communication and Publishing team. You will also work extensively with staff and researchers across all faculties.

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • Data analysis and advice:
    • You collect, combine and analyse data from various source systems and convert them into clear, usable information and advice.
    • You proactively present and share your findings and, upon request, give presentations on findings and trends and share your insights on the use of analysis tools.
  • Use of analysis tools:
    • You apply tools such as Tableau (Prep), Python, VOSviewer, Excel and other tools to analyse, visualise and report data.

  • Trendwatching:
    • You monitor the main internal and external trends in data, information, systems and tooling.
  • Process optimisation:
    • Together with your colleagues in Team Research Analytics, you think about and work on (re)designing analysis processes related to data and information.
  • Strategic advice:
    • You provide the analyses that serve as the basis for strategic advice to heads of faculties and departments for applications for major research projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a higher professional education (HBO)/university degree (WO), preferably with a strong data analysis and/or information management component.
  • Demonstrable experience in data analysis and setting up processes, tools and workflows.
  • A good understanding of the role of information in decision-making processes based on experience.
  • Experience with query skills and programming (e.g. Python, R, SQL).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convert complex data into understandable advice.
  • Fluent in Dutch and English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong analytical, strategic skills, with the ability to persuade different target groups.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

  • Duration of contract is 1 year with prospect of permanent.
  • A job of 32-40 hours per week.
  • A salary based on scale 10 of the CAO for Dutch Universities with a minimum of €3.345,- and a maximum of €5.278,- gross per month based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
